Forums - Gaming - Shuhei Yoshida (head SCEWS): "Kinect is just next-generation EyeToy"

move=wii next-gen

kinect= pseye next gen fact.

Hmm its probably closer to:

Move = Wiimote 1.4

Kinect = Eyetoy 2.0

Considering that Move and the Wiimote are from the same hardware generation. (no offense) I just wanted to throw down some numbers.

I stop reading when he said EyeToy is success. Sony is hopeless.

selling over 10 million and probably all at a profit is not a "considerable success"? plz define success

Success is not needing to come up with a real successor product because you just got it so right first time.

I think the main point -- that there is a need and desire for a controller -- is the point that will help to define what succeeds and what does not.

I have played Eye Toy Games. They are fun in the right setting. But that is limited. Microsoft must overcome this for Kinect to capture the market.

And Move is the next-generation Wii Controller...so?

More like the current generation Wii Motion Plus Controller.  Unless you mean next gen in a "two GameCubes duckt taped together" or a GBC/DSi sort of sense... we're likely going to have wait until the actual "next gen" for the real significant evolutionary upgrade of the Wiimote/Plus.

Besides, EyeToy was just the next gen GameBoy Camera.  Minus printer functionality. :P

I disagree, this is what I think
kinect = eyetoy 2.5
ps eye = eyetoy 2.0
wii motion plus = Wiimote 1.4
move = wii motion plus (plus) ps eye
Plus icon still isn't working

correct me if I am wrong
stop me if I am bias
I love a good civilised debate (but only if we can learn something).

I don't see anything wrong with that. I can't wait for kinect. I will say that I do not think kinect and eye toy are the same, but I can definatly see how kinect could be seen as the next step in the eye toy line (too bad sony didn't improve and evolve it)

they did its called the ps eye. it has a great many of the features Kinect has but yeah Kinect is more advanced than the eye on it own.

It just seems like they didn't really make any changes from the original ps eye. And I really do not think it can do alot of what kinect do. I think that is a fanboy dream. Kinect has two cameras one wich is infrared, and the software for voice recognition and facial recogniton, to sony's one camera that is not infrared, and what I would guess to be slightly worse voice/facial recognition software

well here is differences between the ps eye and kinect

ps eye:

augmented reality which includes,

  • gender recognition,
  • facial recognition,
  • age recognition,
  • object recognition (patented well everyday items are patented),
  • facial expression recognition (patented well laughter is patented),
  • head tracking

there is a mic but it's primary purpose was to help detect the position of the user, in my experience it isn't good at voice recognition, although that could be down to the software as well
movement detection
video conferencing
exoskeleton software, but not to complicated, tracks move, head and some other parts of the users body (requires move)
3D (requires move)

there is more I'm just not thinking of it at the moment. oh and most of the augmented stuff is from what sony says is in its vision library with the exception of eyepet very few games use them.

here the vids I got most of the data from. other things were from personal use.

natal (based on what MS has told us)

augmented reality from what I have seen they also have a pretty descent library although they haven't demonstrated or shown age recognition, I don't see any reason why they can't do it though. the facial expression and use of everyday items are patent protect so unless there is away round it.

3d depth tracking
full body tracking
mic, primarily designed as a command interface,
movement detection, more advanced the eyes uses infra-red and other things
area you have to be in will adjust depending on the size of the room
built in processor to do the calculations, freeing up the 360, processor. (the chip is called prime sense made and named after the company behind kinect)
video conferencing, you will be able to watch movie's during the call.
exoskeleton software very exact, tracks large skeletal points in the users body, also used to determine age and gender, smaller bone parts like wrist can not be track, but the software is significantly better the eyes'.

again there is more probably a lot more with natal but this is just of the top of my head.

I wonder how Sony should feel about that. If he meant that in a derogatory way, is he just bashing the EyeToy? That certainly wouldn't look good on him...
