As much as I love Dragon Quest, it isn't the first thing to come to my mind when I hear "RPG".  In fact, my hatred of WRPGs is the first thing to cross my mind.  Not that I feel they are bad games (I really like some), but they are taking the RPG genre in what I feel is the wrong direction (Mass Effect anyone?).

Then Dragon Quest crosses my mind and it makes me happy again :D!

Actually I felt that ME1 was a step in the right direction, and ME2 took a step back. It was a better game, but not a better RPG.

I actually found ME2 to be a superior RPG, too.

From a role-playing perspective, yes. From an upgrading and leveling up perspective, ME1 is far superior.

That is not what "standard" means.

And I think of Dungeons and Dragons, like any decent, God-fearing nerd.

Different definitions of the same word.

When I hear someone say standard, I think of the thing that most people think of.  In the case of RPG's video games, I think Final Fantasy.  When I think role playing games, I think DnD.

By the way, completely random questions-- is there a magic item in 4th that lets you communicate between long distances?  I remember there were rings in 3rd that let you do that but I can't seem to find them in 4th.

Context dictates definitions, and you're using the wrong one. Standard is the qualitative example against which other works are emasured, typically referred to by an artistic authority or a communal consent - and no, popularity is not the same thing as a communal consent of a qualitative standard, especially when the majority do not partake in a dialogue.

I really have no idea. I have yet to play 4e (sadly).

obviously final fantasy and for good reason people saying other wise are trying to think or some think other than ff i think and listing there favourites

Actually that's quite a naive generalization. Why should FF be synonym to RPG for everyone? Heck, when someone says something about RPG's, there's quite a number of series that I think of before I even consider FF.

Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals is my favourite game of all time, so it's normal that's the first RPG that I think off or that comes to my mind whenever RPG is mentioned. Parasite Eve comes close at second.

FF is not the RPG standard.

Just because you don't like it or it's not the best doesn't mean it can't be the standard.  Often it is those things that exactly what something shouldn't be is the standard.  They've become so watered down and everyone knows them and they just become the standard.

For instance, what do you think when I saw musical, Broadway show, or even opera?

Was it Phantom of the Opera or any other Andrew Lord Webber show?  I wouldn't be surprised since most people think that or Cats or Jesus Christ Superstar.  The funny thing about that is that almost everyone that actually likes Broadway shows despises Andrew Lloyd Webber and everything he is.

Whatever the case and however much they despise them, stuff like Phantom of the Opera has become the musical standard.  The same goes for Final Fantasy.

Actually, I think of Spring Awakening faster than Phantom of the Opera crosses my mind.

In current times, FF is long from being the standard though. Most gamers nowadays know, or care, about RPG's mainly due to MMORPG's, be it by paid subscriptions, or the thousands free ones. WOW is more popular than FF these days.

And i'm speaking as a FF fan and as a person that truly loathes and despises WOW.

FF had a time when it was the RPG series to top, when it was the RPG series to be compared, when every JRPG developer wanted a piece of the success that FF's where having, and that time was during the PSX- early PS2 era.

Completely off topic, but I saw Spring Awakening when it came to town (Dallas) a few months ago and I could not have been more disappointed.  I've been listening to the sound track for more than five years and have loved it to death.  You could imagine how happy I was when I heard Lea Michelle was going to be in a new TV series and even happier when Jonathan Graff came on.  It finally came to town and it was just a horrible experience.  The venue had sound problems, the actors just weren't that good, the stage direction was just odd and not good, and all in all it just felt like amateur hour.  I still love the music, it's just a shame the show was just so bad.

And until some other series comes out as the king of RPG's like FF did during the PSx/PS2 era, it's the standard.  There have been many great and better RPG's than FFXIII, FFXII, and FFX in the last few years, but they still haven't hit the mainstream yet.

Hell, I can't even think of another RPG that has had a commercial in the last five years other than Final Fantasy except Mass Effect.  If anything was going to dethrone FF as the standard, I would probably actually say Mass Effect.

As popular as Mass Effect is though, FFXIII still holds that standard as the traditional RPG.

I think you forgot pokemon. Pokemon is the biggest rpg serie of all time but sometime people forget it.

OT : Earthbounds was the first rpg that come in my mind because its my favorite serie.

Wizardry.  Sir-Tech we salute you!

You put a J in front of that and I think Suikoden.  Put a W in front of it and i think Daggerfall.

Final Fantasy or Dungeon & Dragons

Final Fantasy Series of course.  I just started playing FF7 again.  I was like 8 last time i played it.  Another honorable mention(IMO) is the Kingdom Hearts Series.  I think FF games have better stories than KH(well some of them), but no game fucks your mind harder than Kingdom Hearts.  That story messes with your head for a whole game, then when you find out something you spent a whole year waiting to figure out, you either feel like the biggest idiot in the world because you didn't see it coming and it was obvious or like God.  You people have no idea of what i went through with KH2 and KH:BBS.  Biggest mind fuck ever!

Currently playing

MLB 09: The Show(PS3)

Earthbound and Fallout 3.

I didnt played alot of RPG because I dislike japanese anime clichés, and almost all JRPGs are full of them.

It is superior in terms of preservation of minutia, but I don't think that makes it a better role-playing game. Streamlining can be an improvement, too. And if we agree that ME2's better for actual role-playing...

Ultima..

or Pokémon.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Pokemon may be an RPG but how many people actually think of it as an RPG?  It's hardly the standard.

Also, I don't think I've ever seen a commerical for a Pokemon video game.
