Forums - Microsoft - Kinect Pre-Orders in US

Stopped by Gamestop to pick up Transformers today and after a short discussion guy tries to sell me on the motion controllers for the PS3 and 360.  I told him that I wasn't interested in reserving either right now, that I was taking a "wait and see" approach to both and would buy either (or both) based upon the strengths of the launch line-up.

So here's the interesting part - he says: "If you want Kinect at launch, you should reserve now as we are already almost at our pre-order limit." He didn't expect the SKU to be available for pre-order more than a week or so more.  They required $25 down and thier listed price was $149, no game included.

This is completely anecdotal evidence, I understand, but anyone work at Gamestop or Best Buy that can corroborate such high pre-order numbers?

Please note, I expressed NO MORE desire for Kinect over Move, he offered that information to me, I wasn't fishing for sales info.

Don't trust anything out of a Gamestop's employee mouth.  This isn't a knock on Kinect at all but they're only trying to sell you on something.  Nothing else.

Oh I hear you (not that naive!), but I actually ASKED about Move, HE brought up Kinect and gave me that line after I told him I wasn't reserving either.  You would think if a sale was all he was after, pushing the item I actually asked about would make more sense.

My guess is that they are actually low on pre-orders and need to sell them if he's pushing Kinect on you.

Just a guess though, no legitimate facts to back me up.

They're probably just trying to make sure you know about the things you aren't asking about.

If you express interest in the Move, it means you have interest in motion controls.  Since you're already asking about the Move, they don't need to push that on you, but you might not know about Kinect or perhaps just a little pressure might get you to commit to it.

I'm guessing the same thing would happen if he asked about Kinect except they then would have gave him the same exact story about Move controllers.

It really is just about getting you to commit to buying as much as possible at Gamestop.

That makes more sense. That ALWAYS tell me about games similar to the type I (used to) buy from there.

All gamestop employees have to meet a qutoa on preorders and are sometimes told to push certain products. they will sometimes lie about a products preorder numbers to get you to buy it. because you said you were going to wait and see he said that "preorders are going fast, better preorder right now if you want one." line. most gamestop employees are told to say that based on certain customer responses

I wonder if MS are going to do what Nintendo was accused of (and didn't) by making the 'pre-order limit' low and saying "Look, we've sold out! See how popular Kinect is this holiday etc. etc."

I actually expect kinect to be more front loaded than the move so it might be true
