Forums - Sony - PSP Receives TurboGrafx-16, NeoGeo Support

The PSP gets non-Sony retro console support with the latest firmware release.

7:31 PM - June 29, 2010 - By Kevin Parrish - Source : Tom's Guide US

Tuesday Sony released firmware for both the PlayStation 3 console and the PSP handheld system. But with the hype surrounding Sony's launch of the PlayStation Plus subscription service and the added feature in Tuesday's PS3 firmware release, the PSP's update took somewhat of a backseat... that is until reports of an unannounced Easter egg began to appear.

According to Sony, the v6.30 PSP update--which applies to all models of the PSP--adds the ability to group content and display them in folders. This allows the user to better categorize games saved on the internal card by using folders rather than displaying the titles in one long list. The function was needed long ago, but it's better late than never.

To group the games on the card, PSP owners must first update the firmware and then access the Memory Stick category under "Game" by tapping the "X" button. Choose any game stored on the card and then hit the "Square" button. This should automatically put stored content into their appropriate folders such as PSP, minis and PlayStation.

But what Sony hasn't officially revealed--but is seen clear as day in the snapshot of my PSP to the right--is that the PSP has the ability to play NeoGeo and PCEngine/TurboGrafx-16 games. Apparently these games are already on the Japanese PlayStation Store as we speak, and recently showed up on the ESRB Game Ratings website listing.

With the proverbial cat out of the bag, Sony may officially reveal support for those two classic consoles at Gamescom this August. Perhaps this will lead the way to other virtual console support such as the Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast. Looks like Sony might actually be getting serious with the PSP platform after all this time...

this also could be for the PS3 also, so it's a great thing.

but i see the PSP will get it first between the two.

I'm pretty sure it will, just like minis, which you can play on PS3 too but it was first available for PSP.

yea combined with The Google TV (Android OS) being brought to the PS3 there should be a ton of mini and full game's to keep people's attention.

so with this ps3 disc based software psn software Movies Music Android = a Ton of Content for just One Device!

the convergence is getting to the Point when EVEN Consumer Electronic's have just as much computing capability of some high end PC's from 2 to three year's ago, a freakin Consumer Electronic!

great time to be a gamer.

Very nice! Never played any TurboGrafx or NeoGeo games, but nice to see Sony adding this stuff. Perhaps I'll get a few of the titles that will be available.
