I think I may have a hernia.

1. Is there some sort of self exam I can do?

2. What kind of doctor should I go see?

Hold your testicles in one hand and cough. If your testicles juggle then you've got one of the types of hernia.

Thanks. I most likely have one. Damn, I hate hospitals and surgeries. The mere thought ofg having surgery makes me shake uncontrolably and feel nauseated.

Your family/regular style doctor first. They will diagnose your issues and talk with you about your options. Then if you need any additional help they will refer you onto a specialist. Don't jump to conclusions, wait for a professional diagnosis.

If your feeling wierd...don;)t...it happends alot....heck even i've had a hernia...infact id say atleast 1/6 folks probly have had some form of it......but think about this...atleast you don't have hemroids...hahaha*I dont but thought it was good to say haha*

And I also had a hernia operation when I was very little, but don't remember much of it. I was allegedly more courageous back then.

I'm a physician I'll answer your questions.....although this is too detailed to discuss over the boards.

There are many different types of hernia, but the premise is the same.  All of them involve some of your intestine forcing itself through a weakness in the muscles of your abdominal wall. 

Don't panic though, hernias are not typically a medical emergency.  The red flags that MAKE it a medical emergency are:

1.)Severe abdominal pain.

2.)Blood in your stool.

3.)If the hernia bulges out and cannot be pushed back in.

If any of these are true then you need to be seen by a doctor ASAP (either an ER or Urgent Care Clinic) to be evaluated immediately and potentially have surgery done.

If none of those red flags apply then the surgery is elective, and can be performed at your leisure.
