The Xbox 360 Slim is a horizontal purchase where you gain looks (I think it looks like a cheap, ugly Alienware wannabe), less power consumption, automatic shutoff of the console if the console gets too hot, and quiet. On the downside, you lose backward compatibility (huge for me because I love Fable, Halo, Halo 2 and other Xbox games), looks (the original model is very sensuous with nice curves and no gills on the side for ventilation), and USB ports.
If you already have a working Xbox 360, then this purchase is about as practical as buying a PS2 Slim when you have a working PS2. In other words, you were duped by the marketing and hype.
Finally, I have read reviews stating the Xbox 360 Slim is deeper than the original model meaning if you lay it down horizontal in an entertainment center, then you will not be able to push it back into the cabinet as deep as you could with the original model.
