Forums - Microsoft - Pachter: "$99 is the Magic Price for Kinect"

Industry analyst expects $149 to be the maximum price.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has suggested that $99 would be the perfect price for Microsoft's new Xbox 360 motion control peripheral Kinect.

Microsoft refused to comment on the price of the motion controller at E3 last week but did say that they had set a price for the peripheral which would be announced at a later date.

Retailers such as Gamestop and Amazon.com have already listed Kinect at $149.99, a price point which Pachter expect to be the maximum retail price gamers will have to pay when it launches this fall.

"So I honestly think right now that they are between $99 and $149. Gamestop went at $149 as well, so did Amazon," said Pachter, " Those retailers aren't advertising $149 and then having it pop in at $199 so I think that's the ceiling."

Pachter also suggested that pricing Kinect any higher than $99 would be off-putting to gamers.

"I think $99 is a magic point and gamers aren't going over that. I think $99 is the right price for this and it'll accomplish Microsoft's goal. If they can't make very many it's going to be $149 because they want to maximise profits and they'll drop when they have supply."

Microsoft's Kinect is expected to launch this fall.

I agree that $99 price would be a lot more of a impulse buy. Although that could be how much it will sell for when bundled with the Xbox 360.
