Microsoft: Kinect pricing to be announced at gamescom

Microsoft has revealed that it’s to release pricing information on Kinect at gamescom in August.

Entertainment & Devices at Microsoft Germany, Oliver Kaltner, explained that the company was keen not to distract people Kinect’s accessibility at this moment.

“I believe that the price point is not the critical topic, but something you need at the end of the communication in order to place a product properly into a market,” he told GamesIndustry Germany (via GI) at E3. “From that standpoint pricing is an important topic for our target groups, our partners and, of course, also for us.

“I also think it is the right decision not to determine price points now, because it distracts completely from our actual core story with all its possibilities in the area of gaming, movie, music and social entertainment. We firmly believe that we can offer an unique innovation.

He went on to add: “Being responsible for the business in Germany, it comes in handy to still have certain flexibility. In eight weeks we are at gamescom and we will know the price not later than that, because we will start to sell [to retail].”

Hints were also dropped in regards to other things we could see in Cologne in the summer.

“I am very proud to say that Microsoft as a corporation did understand, how important gamescom is. We will have a much bigger and more spectacular appearance at gamescom this year than we did last year,” said Kaltner.

“We have invested well – and because we did not unveil everything on E3 we will have also for gamescom a lot of fresh information.”

We’ll be there. Bring it.

Probably to try and allow some hype to develop from the press coverage given at E3 without price becoming the major talking point.

Its about the time I predicted the retailers would need to know. It gives them about 4 weeks to design flyers/arrange store layouts etc and they may as well announce the price at that time themselves because it'll probably get leaked anyway, so better to come from them than someone else.

I believe it allows them to announce the 2010 fall pricing after the current Arcades and Elites have all been sold.  They can maximize the sales of the new 360S as well as clear inventory at the $149/$249/$299 before they put the new pricing structure in place with the new Arcade and the Kinect bundle.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

First possibility:

- it will be so cheap that they plan to ruin Sony move release on 15th of September

Second possibility:

- it will be so expansive they want to hide ugly truth for as long as possible and sell as many xbox to unsuspecting people hyped by e3 as possible.

PROUD MEMBER OF THE PSP RPG FAN CLUB

last gamescom they anounced Fable III... so a bigger show might be pretty big actually.

First:

If Sony doesn't know how much it'll cost it will make it harder for them to respond to the price/bundles. There are very good reason why things like pricing are closely guarded commercial secrets.

Second:

Whats so expensive specifically? $149 is still within the same price bracket as the Move controller. $200 is as much as an Xbox 360 Arcade was before the price cut but doesn't even make sense.
