Forums - Microsoft - Game ideas for Kinect?

just everyones opinion seem to be skewed to : kinect only developer or controller-hardcore developers. Microsoft better announce some hardcore titles before gears 3 launches........

Living Room Wars!

Online game where your living room is the battlefield. Try to hit the other player with imaginary guns while using your sofa as cover.

Well I think I've solved the conundrum with FPS. Try to stay with me here. This is going to be pretty involved.

One we have to solve the problem of actually shooting the gun. If Kinect has the ability to distinguish between an open hand a closed fist then this problem is solved. Try to imagine your outstretched arm, elbow bent like you are shooting an imaginary gun, except your hand is open instead of a finger representation of a gun. When you want to shoot you just make a fist.

Two how do you solve the problem of reloading? Simple you take your other hand while one is outstretched in the shooting position and hit the bottom of your fist, like you would be putting a clip into it. Kinect will recognize the two hands coming together and reload your gun.Kind of like a motion of paper, rock scissors and you select rock instead  your bottom hand comes to the rock instead of the rock hitting your hand.

Three how do you solve the problem of switching weapons? Pretty simple as well. This is just one scheme idea. Grenades would be on your left shoulder, clavicle area. Touch that area with your shooting hand and it will switch to a grenade in your hand. Then from there throw your grenade in a normal throwing motion. Next for alternate weapons touch the outside of either thigh, right side for handgun (secondary weapon), and left side for primary weapons, or vice versa depending if you're left handed or right handed.

Fourth the hardest solution to come up with is movement. In order to walk forward you move your right foot forward, or left for left handed people. As long as your foot is forward your character moves forward. Move your foot to the left in front of you, you walk left. Move your foot to the right in front of you, your character walks right. Move your foot straight, you get the point.

Lastly crouching is pretty self explanatory, you just crouch. Slight movements looking to the left and right is easily done by turning your torso in that direction.

This may be hard to all take in and imagine but I think it actually solves the controller free problem. Maybe Firebird studios is working on this right now and my imagination will come to fruition next E3. I wouldn't be surprised to see a new graphically superior, full body control FPS coming out for Kinectic created by the newly formed Firebird studios.

everything sounds really cool there but for the camera movement maybe eye tracking. if you look at the edge of the screen it starts to move in that direction.

yeah natal could be really cool for teaching you things.  your shape will teach you several forms of martial arts along with fitness techniques. the martial arts bit really got me thinking.  this area seems like it could have great potential.

Yeah thats a good idea. Or just turn your head in that direction. I don't think Kinect would be precise enough to measure eyeball movement.

I hate to sound petty - but wouldn't it just be easier to use the superior controller already available?  Why shoehorn something into Kinect for which the device is clearly not well suited?

I want hybrid games - mix of normal controller plus Kinect.  Say an Combat RPG like Deus Ex where you use your hands to manipulate puzzles, type into computes to hack them, etc. Minority Report style in combination with normal controller for combat / movement.

I also like the idea of squad shooters with hand guestures others have mentioned.

I'd also like a slower paced Myst type puzzler (which I thought Milo and Kate hinted at) where you solve puzzles and interact via guestures and hand movements

Boxing titles seem obvious fit.

I'd also like to see someone try some muliplayer with Kinect - boxing live opponents, or competing to solve puzzles in an adventure setting, etc.

For the same reason there are shooters on the Wii and will be shooters with Move. Because you can.

Obviously there are two sports that will work perfectly with Kinect. Boxing and Golf. My guess is the next Fight Night will work with Kinect and online play is a guarantee.

For golf I'm actually hoping for a simulator style not Tiger Woods (Tiger Woods golf sucks, been the same for the past 5 years). Since it tracks your movements there should be no reason why I cant hold a golf club in my hand while swinging.

kinetic is more advanced than the eye and Sony's vision library already includes it, so I am sure Kinetic will track that close too.  the only problem I can think of is if you turn to look at someone your character would start to spin on the spot.

Using software Kinect might be able to tell where you're looking, but the tracking isn't on that level from what I've read.  The smallest 'cube' of space being tracked is larger than an eye I believe.  However perhaps software for image recognition of the camera input could work out where your eyes are pointing.

I have to say though, the idea of working out something like this I think is actually a bit daft.  If I was without the use of my limbs I'd welcome being able to look right and have it do something, but with working limbs that's just using Kinect for the sake of it when the gamepad does a better job already of this kind of thing.

There's a whole lot I think Kinect should be able to do well, and I think  MS need to get those right before trying for something like this.

I think you'd want another level of resolution/tracking again (Kinect 2 with the next Xbox?) to get to this kind of level.

lol - because you can doesn't mean you should.  Besides, at the risk of starting a terrible arguement, the Wii controls I believe are better suited to FPS than Kinect on its own.  The nunchuck for movement with the 'mote's trigger and aiming is a no brainer - no need for trying to solve convoluted control issues it works fine in a clear manner.
