I'm very interested in this game after playing Zangeki no Reginleiv on Wii. I read that it's the same as EDF but it's swords and magic instead of tanks.

Zangeki has lots of faults but it's still a very good game. Weaponry is awesome. Graphics are weak but that allows for masses of enemies and epic mayhem.

Is it the same with EDF? Are it's poor review scores mainly due to graphics but the game overall is addictive as crack?

EDF is a game you have to know what you are getting before you play it.  If a person goes in expecting AAA production value, a great story, and top flight graphics with no pop, a quick and even frame rate, and also awesome explosions and realistic damage infliction, they are going to be VERY disappointed.  However...

If you are looking for a game that is more cheesy that Wisconsin, complete with a corny 1950s sci-fi movie (full of cliches and allied troops running around like they are that, like they will yell and keep running into walls), the ability to level a city trying to save it, TOO MANY WEAPONS (some of which are REALLY stupid), and a bundle of over the top excess action, and too many levels (50 levels I believe), then this is the game for you.  I think I picked it up for $40 when it first came out (or $30 later on) and played through it, and NO WAY will I get rid of it (unless they do a sequel).

The game is pure cornball action, complete with shooting giant ants that fly WAY FAR AWAY when you shoot them with a shotgun.

A close comparison for what is gone for here is what people saw in Deadly Premonition.  In both games, the quality seems off in spots, but it fits the game perfectly.  The lower quality stuff lends real well to the B-movie action seen in the game.
