The definition that you're giving is VERY strict and excludes some of the best JRPGs, Fire Emblem for example. Also, last time I checked, Modern Warfare has experience points, and they level you up. How is that not an RPG? The same happens in Counter-Strike, except it doesn't carry over from match to match, which is why i called it a limited RPG. Both of these games have separate battles (in the form of matches) with a specialized system.
I'll continue to focus on the definition, thank you very much. If I can't define things by their definition, then classification means nothing.
If I asked for a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich, and I got a peanut butter and strawberry sandwich, would they be the same? They both share the connotation as PB&J sandwiches, but they are two very different things (especially since strawberry jelly tastes like garbage).

Modern Warfare is not an RPG because it doesn't have a specialized system for battles. The entire game is one big system for shooting.
Fire Emblem, I don't know much about, but I do think there is a system that allows you to power up according to the enemies you defeat. If not, it's a strategy game.
The definition is strict because that's what RPGs are.
And no, the connotations aren't the same. PBJ has a connotation of peanut butter and jelly. Meanwhile, hate and loathe have the same definition but not connotation. In colloquial English, you can't stick to rigid definitions because it hardly makes sense. Hell, not even proper English can you.

Exactly, the entire game is the battle system, the exact same as Fire Emblem, which is considered an RPG (my favorite one at that).
Fire Emblem has a system for leveling up, but it's MUCH more basic than MW2s is.
Also, I admit that my analogy was rather stupid, but it's the closest thing I have. There's not many cases where this kind of thing happens, RPGs are the only one to my knowledge.
I fail to see how we can't live by only definitions, that's kinda the POINT of language, isn't it? To give things definitions?
