Interactive entertainment chief Chris Lewis reveals why the UK is a special market for Microsoft

The PlayStation brand has always enjoyed a strong following in Europe and, in particular, the UK but Microsoft's VP of interactive entertainment business for EMEA Chris Lewis has revealed why it remains one of his firm's key territories, too.

"We don't break out figures by country, but the UK continues to be a very strong market for us with the highest attach rate in the world," he told MCV in an exclusive interview in this Friday's magazine.

"In the face of price drops, new form factors and massive marketing expenditure by the competition, Xbox 360 still grew full-year market share in EMEA from 2008 to 2009.

"In November, we also celebrated selling 10 million consoles into customers' homes in EMEA. Our games attach rate remains the highest in the industry, by an increasing margin, which makes us both an enviable platform and a great partner for publishers and retailers alike."

i always thought the US had the highest xbox 360 attach rate. 

The 360 here in UK is very liked and strong. Everyone has one.

What is the global attach rate these days?

I thought America would have the best attach rate, but i guess UK loves them some Xbox.

i know a lot of fellow germans who import their games from the UK. i guess they count towards the UK attach rate?

From a purist point of view it might.

The 360 is very popular in UK, but I believe that a lot of 360 owners in Europe import from UK due to price/exchange differences, artifically raising the attach rate for UK as the sales would register for the UK.

I don't know if it's enough to really have pushed it this high, but I believe it's pretty prevelant so it might be the case.

I'd like to know the PS3 UK attach rate for similar reasons as everyone I know in France, Holland and Germany regulary purchase from UK for both 360 and PS3.

There's no doubt though that outside the US the UK is the second core market for 360.
