Can I just say I'm only using the word Yankee because someone is butthurt over it. I don't know if its an insult or not and I am not looking to start a trend here.

It means Northerner.  The term Yankee was used by the South to differentiate themselves from the North during the Civil War... and often still used to this day to highlight the cultural differences between the North and the South.

It's the equivlent of calling someone from England or Northern Ireland "Scottish".

Well except a lot of the South still dislikes the North quite a bit.

Southerners may find it insulting because it'd be like calling some prissy or metrosexual or something.

Ok, but for anyone born in America like me, saying American as a demonym for USA is also insulting towards the rest of the continent, what other word is there? Usaian?

You call Soccer Football...  right?  What's the difference?

Assosiation Football is just one sport in the football grouping.   It's the same with the USA... except from the fact there is no "American" grouping and only North American and South American.

By your own standards calling Soccer, Football is actually a worse offense.

Really. I always thought it meant a southerner.

Why is it considered an insult now?

Because the Southerners used it as an Insult to the North, and still do... though not too often.

Same regional bullshit as usual really, the South thinks they're better then the North and Vice Versa.  Southerners feel more many and also more honorable then Northerners.

Also reconstruction of the south after the Civil War really did more damage then good, and in the end you can say some of the south STILL hasn't recovered from the Civil War.

I will tally up scores next week as I have tests this week.

By your own standars, calling American to people from the USA and then complaining when people say football is as hypocritical. And yes, there's an American grouping, it's people from the American continent

Fuck, I can't post the table without it being screwed, what's with this damned site's reply system?

Just like England. Although since WW2 the north has finally started to break free and find its feet.

Ok calm down. I entered Argie into the search engine. Very valid way of doing things and it redirected me to argentina.

Argie bargie is an old saying. Relating it to one event, the start of an invasion you expect some name calling by the invaded. If you think Argie is a slur then you need to get over it. It's short for Argentina and colloquial slang. Not a hate word. It can be used as one but so can the word gay. hould we stop using that word?
