Em actually Sony should have not gone against the DVD forum and create a new format when HD DVD had been approved by the DVD forum.
HD DVD had been voted down twice by DVD forum members before they changed the voting rules, Blu-Ray isn't solely Sony's baby and had and has a majority industry backing. Although Sony developed a similar format aimed at the professional data storage space the end result is due to its great industry backing. The Compact Disc (CD) wasn't solely the doing of Sony and was co-designed with Philips and was a result of its great industry backing. With regard to DVD, Sony and Philips dropped their format to prevent a format war, but HD DVD is unacceptable as it's a far less open solution compared to Blu-Ray's adoption of cross platform Java technologies.
Toshiba and Microsoft shouldn't have tried to dictate against majority market wishes and this format war could have been prevented.
