I think yes 3D wont truly take off until it can be viewed without glasses and obviously when the cost of said 3DTV's are at a resonable price for the average consumer.

Before bitching about glasses people need to understand what it means to have 3d without glasses...

The problem, as has been noted, is the need for a new TV. Its been 4½ years since I bought my HDTV and, you know what, they're STILL not mainstream really. Sure, people have DIGITAL tv's but they're only using them because of the FCC backed switch from analog to digital. We won't see such a switch for something as ultimately trivial as 3D. So I don't know if it'll ever become mainstream if special TV's have to be purchased.
