I think in Europe the 360 might need one in 2008, but in United States its unleashing hell, especially in software sales. And if they corner even a third of the casual market you'll never see the beast unleashed, "if you know what I mean". I feel time might be running out for the PS3's comeback.
No, not when demand is there and they are still selling at a loss. Its smarter to keep it as it is for them on a business perspective even if they lose a bit of market share from it.

In EU/AU all the systems need a pricedrop. They also need companies to start doing world wide releases.

I doubt 360 could take the Japanese market even at $50, but they need to do something there.
In Europe yes, they can't allow PS3 to gain momentum
In NA, no, they're in a good spot right now, but I would suggest one prior to GTAIV to mess PS3 up.

In Japan I really don't think there's anything they can do, besides give it a new name and re-release bootleg copies of old PS1 & 2 games on it.
