I've been following the reviews of this movie and it looks almost guaranteed that a majority of reviews will be favourable. I use Rotten Tomatoes as the review site and currently it's on 57% http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/prince_of_persia_sands_of_time/. To be rated as an "objectively good" it needs to get to 60%. I doubt it'll get to 60% and I doubt it'll stay above 55%.
But this is a fantastic achievement for video game adaptations in a genre where the vast majority of movies sit at the <30% level and a lot of them get <20%.
From what I've found on Rotten Tomatoes the top 5 review scores are:
Prince of Persia - 57% (so far)
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - 44%
Mortal Kombat - 35%
Resident Evil - 34%
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children - 33%
So Prince of Persia pretty much has the critical praise to lay a claim for best VG Movie to date. Now it needs to make $275 million at the world wide box office to be the highest grossing.
I think it will do this easily. In fact I reckon it can do $200 million in the USA itself.
It seems this movie may be the break through movie for [the right] video games to be source material for good movies that will appeal to the main stream.
The question is what genre is the best source material, is it only coincidence that PoP is a game story genre that hasn't had the movie treatment until now?
Swords and sandals adventure [Assassins Creed]?
Sci-fi [Mass Effect, Halo, Gears]?
Horror [Alan Wake]?
Thriller [Heavy Rain]?
Contemporary action [Uncharted]?
Fantasy [Dragon Age]?
