Forums - General - Prince of Persia Best VG Movie so Far

I've been following the reviews of this movie and it looks almost guaranteed that a majority of reviews will be favourable. I use Rotten Tomatoes as the review site and currently it's on 57% http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/prince_of_persia_sands_of_time/. To be rated as an "objectively good" it needs to get to 60%. I doubt it'll get to 60% and I doubt it'll stay above 55%.

But this is a fantastic achievement for video game adaptations in a genre where the vast majority of movies sit at the <30% level and a lot of them get <20%.

From what I've found on Rotten Tomatoes the top 5 review scores are:

Prince of Persia - 57% (so far)

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - 44%

Mortal Kombat - 35%

Resident Evil - 34%

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children - 33%

So Prince of Persia pretty much has the critical praise to lay a claim for best VG Movie to date. Now it needs to make $275 million at the world wide box office to be the highest grossing.

I think it will do this easily. In fact I reckon it can do $200 million in the USA itself.

It seems this movie may be the break through movie for [the right] video games to be source material for good movies that will appeal to the main stream.

The question is what genre is the best source material, is it only coincidence that PoP is a game story genre that hasn't had the movie treatment until now?

Swords and sandals adventure [Assassins Creed]?

Sci-fi [Mass Effect, Halo, Gears]?

Horror [Alan Wake]?

Thriller [Heavy Rain]?

Contemporary action [Uncharted]?

Fantasy [Dragon Age]?

If this does well, expect a flood of new game movies to ACTUALLY materialise.

Is the top grossing so far Mortal Kombat?

geez when you put it like that, that's one hell of an accomplishment.

Top grossing of all time is Tomb Raider I. Then it's Pokemon, then it's Mortal Kombat.

PoP is now on 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, which makes it a good movie according to their criteria. Dunno if it'll last. Looking good though.

rottentomatoes is not to be fully trusted.

I still think the most appreciated video game movie is Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. There's only 6 reviews of the movie on rottentomatoes which is not very accurate.

For the niche audience I totally agree. But from a mainstream perspective it's pretty reliable. I didn't notice it only had 6 reviews for Advent Children, If I'd noticed that I probably would have left it out of the top 5 list, because 6 reviews isn't really enough to qualify in a "best of genre list". It might be the most appreciated by gamers, but do you think the movie review media would have appreciated it?

Having said that I think a lot of critics were overly harsh about the latest Robin Hood. I went to see it (somewhat reluctantly because of the reviews) but I really liked it. I'd give it a solid 6.5-7/10, definitely worth seeing at the movies, but would work OK on DVD too if you had a big enough TV.
