Forums - Sony - If I own Mario kart, should I buy Modnation Racers?

I don't know MK Wii, and I've yet to play MNR (but I'm getting it for sure). But if you like kart racing then I think there's probablyl enough quality in MNR for someone who has reasonable access to a PS3 to warrant getting the game. At least convince your friend to get it then you can play it without having to fork out the $$.

Thanks Torillian. I'm not overly bothered by aesthetic user generated content so I think I shant get the game Edit: At least not immediately, I'll wait to see the calibre of levels that can be made and maybe wait for a price drop

@ twesterm - They are some good examples of games that you would want to own multiple similar games.

However, can you really say that if you owned Mario Kart: Wii, that you would pay $50 for Mario Kart: Double Dash? What about Pokemon Black and Pokemon White? Nintendogs: Labrador and Nintendogs: Poodle?

Fact is, all the games you pointed out (except the shooters, which in the case of Battlefield vs MW2 they are completely different games anyway) are plot based games that have a start point and an end point. Mario Kart and MNR are completely different which is why I am asking if these are the sorts of games where there is a point owning both.

Now see, that's a valid point and it's still fine.  Take something like TF2 and Left 4 Dead 2.  Both games are game with no ending point but it's still worth having even though they're both shooters.  They're both the same genre and really similar games, but they're still different.

Mario Kart Wii and Mod Nation Racers may be closer than TF2 and L4D2 but they're still different enough.  They're both kart racers that are really close to each other, but they're still different games.  If you like that type of game then there's no problem getting both.

Yes, people that completely miss the point of posts do exist.

not everybody has unlimited budget or throw all their cash at games dood.

Again, you're missing the point.

I'm not saying you absolutely have to buy one if you have the other and the OP isn't saying anything about budget.  Actually read the OP and then answer.  The premise of this thread is if you own x game and it is similar to y game , should you get it?

This isn't about budget, this is about should you own two similar games.  The answer to anyone paying attention is yes, there is nothing wrong with that.

Reading comprehension, it's a great thing to have.

that really depends on how close the game play mechanics are though, if they are really close, then forget it, why buy another? but if it's the difference of god of war 3 to bayonetta, fuck yes get both. there is a reason that my FPS purchases are almost non existent these days. I'm not interested in clones, the same reason i don't have 3d dot game heroes, why bother play another old games rip off collection? same reason i'm not interested in darksider. 3d zelda is also starting to tire me out unless the game play is really different with the new one.

I started writing another response but your comment about 3D Dot Game Heroes just flaunts your ignorance and I just don't have the patience for people like you.  You're just not worth my time.

I have to agree with twesterm :(

Kidding kidding.

say whatever you want, i've seen people play it plenty of times, you can only get so many of the same things before you start getting tired of them, if they make another SMG then I'm prolly going to opt out of that one too /shrug

if it's your thing to play the same things over and over again and paying each time, be my guest, i got better things to do and money to spend else where.

So you're saying these two games are different enough that it's worth having both, cool, thanks

Oh, and by the way, even though I didn't state it in the OP, I am on a budget (a student budget) so every game I decide to buy means that I have to push the other awesome games on my to buy list lower, which is why I'm trying to work out wether to get this or not.

I shall give people a few weeks to make some awesome tracks and then check youtube to see how good they are

I personally wouldn't get it. They are different games, but have very similar mechanics. You are just substituting Nintendo characters for the ability to customize.

As for myself, I only need one great game per genre (BRAWL is my fighting game, Burnout is my racing game, Halo is my shooter). When I have two very similar games, I tend to stick with the one that's better overall. Why play a similar, somewhat inferior game when you have something better right next to it on the shelf? This is why I already traded in No More Heroes 2. I find the first one much more fun to play, even though NMH2 does improve on some things. But I just knew that anytime I ever get a hankering for NMH, I'm gonna just pop in the original. One of the few exceptions to this rule is Super Mario Galaxy and SMG2. I couldn't part with either of those.

So in my opinion, in this scenario, I would say that it's better to play the game first (borrow or rent) then decide if it's worth your time and money.

*also:  They just put up a review of MNR on Gametrailers.com.  I suggest checking that out.

download the demo it will give you a good idea of the creation modes as well as the racing even though it is limited. I love the track designer I several very fun tracks including one like a roller coaster with a huge incline jump and huge free fall. The auto populate makes things even better.

Yes please, and in the process, try to trade in Mario Kart.
