Forums - General - 54 year old female British teacher may get 40 lashes and jail time in Sudan

As a muslim I want to say that the law was fine but the punishment was too severe. The teacher was not aware of the law and it was the kids that chose the name. Another problem I have with this case is that people enforcing the laws do not follow it themselves. Many leaders around the middle east drink alchohol, fornicate, punish people without proper trial even though there against the laws of islam and the country. These countries need serious government reforms to weed out all the coruption that is present.

Islam is starting to piss me off
religion in general is stupid

I know, let's effectively impose our religion on everyone in the country. Religion requires faith, not reason   and so we can use it to put whatever we like into our country's laws because religion cannot be questioned!

She got 15 days in prison then she will be deported.

Quite lucky she is to be deported because any country that can treat a teacher like that when it was clerly an innocent mistake doesn't deserve any outside help.

'Sudan's top clerics had called for the full measure of the law to be used against Mrs Gibbons and labelled her actions part of a Western plot against Islam.'

I would hope if there was a plot against them it would be rather more sophisticated than naming a teddy bear Muhammad!

I don`t mind religion having a special seat next to politics, as long as it doesn`t abuse it`s seat. There are many countries in the world that even have more than one official religion and if they can live like that, countries where laws are made based on a single religion have something to learn. Religion should be "used" to exlpore and improve the good side of mankind with love and mutual respect.

This is not the way. This is just intolerance and pure hatred. Sometimes i think that religion only mattered at first and now it`s just about power.

Too funny. When was religion not about power? Care to explain?

all the good old memories come to mind with the popes being the most powerful beings in Europe and kings begging in front of them. Learn history.

That was the past and things have change since that time. That doesn`t mean it doesn`t happen or it can`t happen ever again, but it`s clearly not the same as it was some centuries ago. Unfortunately, some cases, like the one above, only show how the principles of religion can be misused (speling?).

That`s why i say that sometimes it seems their religion isn`t being offended, but their own pride and vision of themselves.

Whats the difference? Religion is part of their identity.

And it`s part of people like superchunk and myself. Yet, it seems we both disagree with how religion is used by some individuals/countries. That`s my assumption superchunk.

Studies say otherwise. It's not that simple.

Not saying your are wrong or lying but can you cite those studies please?  I would very much like to read them.

She was probably deported out of the country more for here own safety then due to breaking any laws.

Your last line is pure gold!  I laughed really hard. XD

Anyone here offended if their countries flag is burnt?

It's a piece of material with colour on it and means nothing to me.
