Sony's PlayStation 3 console shortages reached as high as 80 percent, according to retailer GameStop.
The company noted on its financial call this morning that the ongoing shortages of the PS3 left the retailer with little inventory during its first quarter of sales.
GameStop COO Paul Raines noted on the call that on an average daily basis, all U.S. stores were out a stock on PS3 for 80 percent of the time. The Nintendo Wii fared a bit better, only managing to remain in stock 50 percent of the time.
Post-holiday hardware sales have been slower than expected for Sony due to the shortage. The PlayStation 3 sold 180,800 units in April, according to NPD. The company said it hopes to have ample supply more readily available going forward.
"As we've said previously, consumer demand remains incredibly high, and PS3 supply will continue to be tight across our retail channels," a Sony spokesperson told IGN. "Despite current shortages in the market, we expect to improve the situation shortly"
Sony confirmed last week that a newer hardware model of the PS3 console has started shipping in North America with a smaller, more efficient graphics processor.
