Recently, it was revealed that Sony is now making a profit on each PS3 sold, that made me wonder how that could actually be of benefit to the customer. Since Sony has new, smaller chips that is making this possible, then presumably, they could afford to make more inexpensive Playstation 3s.
I think that Sony could use this to their advantage to rapidly pass the 360 and make it seem like more of a game between Sony and Nintendo.
If Sony was to bring out a $200.00 PS3 model (and include a 40 to 60 gig hardrive in the box, something 360's budget Arcade model lacks) and bring back backwards compatability with PS2 games to the PS3 as a selling point, then, I think we could see the PS3 pass the 360 in six months.
Also, even though Wii's lead over PS3 is practically insurmountable at this point in time, I still believe that a $200.00 PS3 offering backwards compatabilty with PS1 and PS2 games, blu-ray, a harddrive, and the ability to play PS3 games (plus with the PS3 having motion control of its own coming in the near future) all for $200.00 would be too much of a bargain for most customers to turn down.
Even though Wii has for all practical purposes won this console gen, it would be a big feather in Sony's cap if they were to start winning every fiscal year until the end of the gen. I think the PS3 model I envisage could handily sell 20 million units by this time next year eclipsing what Nintendo has said as its goal of 18 million consoles during the next year and even take away several of those sales from Nintendo in the process.
In conclusion, I think drastic pricecuts or changes in sales strategy (eg. Microsft would have to include harddrive with each 360 sold) for Wii or 360 would be the only way the competitors could compete with this version of PS3.
What do you thinki would happen in the console race if Sony brought out a $200.00 PS3 with full backwards compatability with PS2 games and a 60 gig harddrive in the next couple of months?
