Forums - Sony - Please help me overcome my hatred (fear?) of FPS shooters

I wish I could give you a good tip, but I can't play FPS on the console unless I have the keyboard/mouse combination. The analogs to me are better for third person action games than first person games. I guess it all boils down to preference. If I were you, I'd rent, see if you might get into it, but don't get ot the point where your frustrated with the controls and won't give up. It's just a game.

It seems the mods need help with this forum.  I have zero tolerance for trolling, platform criticism (Rule 4), and poster bad-mouthing (Rule 3.4) and you will be reported.

Play Half Life 1.

heck maybe the original doom.

Do I need to know the story of Half Life 1 in order to pick up on 2? i get annoyed with games that labled "part 2" yet have absolutely nothing to do with the previous game. Final Fantasy has done that 13 times.

But in this case, it would be better for me. Still, if there's no reason to not enjoy the first Half Life, then maybe I'll give it a whirl.

Any other Xbox recommendations would be appreciated since I can pick up a used game for $10 and then eventually jump onto the PS3 FPS wagon. Gimme some recommendations with a great story. That trumps great action or visuals any day.

EDIT:  "casual friendly" means you don't get killed every 5 minutes, right?

points to my post above, play those. Wolf 3D can be found for under $4.99 at Wlamart normall.

Seems like your real problem is just getting used to the First Person perspective.

Perhaps a frantically paced shooter isn't your best idea.

Since you seem to have access to a computer, look into getting a copy of one of the Thief PC games.  They're first person stealth games which means they're very different from shooters and much more challenging in many ways.  They do a very good job at putting the player into Garret's (the main character) shoes.

"Get half life if you love pushing crates and trying to figure out physics puzzles."

You obviously haven't played Half-Life 2 if you think that's what it is about. 99.9% of the game has nothing to do with physics puzzles, I can only remember one. The physics is there for fun.

"Do I need to know the story of Half Life 1 in order to pick up on 2?"

Hardly. Though if you want to be extra, just look up the story on Wikipedia.

"But in this case, it would be better for me. Still, if there's no reason to not enjoy the first Half Life, then maybe I'll give it a whirl."

Since you don't like FPS games I suggest you start with HL2. I don't really like FPS games either, but HL2 is still one of my favourite games of all time.

@those who played: Was I the only one who get motion sickness back in the Wolfstein 3D days?

Well, I am not sure if your problem is with not being able to seeing your own body or not, since you talk about surrounding.

If you just want to be able to see your surrounding quickly or more of it, I'd recommend a mouse since it's best at turning around. Although you can get pretty fast turning with an analog stick... I guess.

If you are uncomfortable without being able to see your own body, I recommend some FPS that acutally let you view your own body. The only one I can think of at the moment is S.T.A.L.K.E.R for PC, but I am not 100% sure. (

I am a PC gamer, and also have a NDS now, but without access to a Nintendo Wii until End of 2007.
