Forums - Sony - Please help me overcome my hatred (fear?) of FPS shooters

Hi

First, I'm new to VGC so welcome to me.  Second, please promise not to smack or kill me when you read this:

I have never played an FPS shooter.

I have never had the desire to touch, hear or smell an FPS, let alone play one.

During all the hoopla over Doom 3, Quake, Unreal Tournament, Halo, Far Cry, bla bla bla... I just quietly turned the page and found something of better interest to read about.

So now my dilemma... every frickin game being released and getting 9's and 10's are FPS games like Bioshock and Halo 3 and (I think) Killzone.

Should I just rent one and get it over with?  I really hate the thought of having to constantly stare down the shaft of a gun/rifle and shoot whatever is in front of me.  It's like Batman's suit that has no swivel to the neck... he has to turn his entire body and shoulders to look left or right.  I don't want that feeling.  I like seeing myself in 3rd person to see my surroundings.

I think 90% of racing gamers hate the "in your face" close up perspective of the car for this exact same reason.  They want to see their surroundings.

Is there an FPS that lets you switch views so I can pick the one I like best?  RE4was really great when it came to using rifles, but I would never pick such a close up view to play through the entire game.

HELP!   And I just bought my PS3 2 days ago.  I won't have Uncharted or my racing game until Xmas.  A game similar to Mass Effect would be perfect for me, but I don't think there is anything similar for PS3 yet.

Thanks!

Maybe you should just kill yourself instead.

Is that the advice you would give a poor, wounded gamer searching for meaning? I really WANT to enjoy a first FPS, I just don't want to make a bad choice.

Oh, I have an Xbox too. Maybe I should just start with Halo 1?

maybe try not to look at the TV.

no lol welcome to VGChartz ummm i dont know maybe start of with a fun multiplayer FPS (Halo series) so you can play it with your mates and get more comfortable with the whole genre and since your mates are there you'll feel fine.

I wasnt very fond of FPS a few years ago but this has helped me (playing with mates is awsome) and now i play FPS regularly.

You just don't seem genuine. But if you are...start with Half-Life 2. DO NOT start with Halo, it's a genuinely awful game.

Get Halo 3, its incredibly casual friendly. Thats why many pc gamers hate it but the average joe gamer loves it

Get half life if you love pushing crates and trying to figure out physics puzzles. Most casual gamers will throw their controller at the tv like me. Get Halo 3, all action, story, music, and fun.

if you have an N64 buy Goldeneye 007 and play that first. If you dont, and have a decent enough computer get the Unreal Anthology or the classic of classics Wolfenstein 3D. Most of the time though, its not really about staring down the barrel and skilling things. Its about timing, what the guns do, and story.

Do I need to know the story of Half Life 1 in order to pick up on 2? i get annoyed with games that labled "part 2" yet have absolutely nothing to do with the previous game. Final Fantasy has done that 13 times.

But in this case, it would be better for me. Still, if there's no reason to not enjoy the first Half Life, then maybe I'll give it a whirl.

Any other Xbox recommendations would be appreciated since I can pick up a used game for $10 and then eventually jump onto the PS3 FPS wagon. Gimme some recommendations with a great story. That trumps great action or visuals any day.

EDIT:  "casual friendly" means you don't get killed every 5 minutes, right?
