It's better to have him realize him. Read up on some basic philosophy, and introduce him to the mindset of having to have an actual reason for everything. Ask him and get him to prove why stealing is bad, why we have property rights, government, and then finally work up, why there needs to be a concept of god or not.
Introduce to him the concept of Occam's razor in very simple examples. Perhaps to try to do an altered and mini version of Descartes's Meditations (without the assuming god exists parts, and perfect concept and what not).
Just saying "God doesn't exist" will be an massive shock. You need to make him slowly realize it. And also emphasize the point that he should be living a utilitarian life, not one of striving immortality.
