300 watts isnt gonna cut it. You need a 450 Watt supply as a minimum anymore. if your gonna replace your Motherboard you might as well replace the entire computer.

An Antec Earthwatts 380W or a Corsair 400W is enough for most people, especially with so man companies focusing on making parts that are more enegry-efficient. The only reason for anything more is if you're running a high-end workstation, gaming rig, or server.

That being said, if he wants to run games like Crysis or Gears, especially in high settings, then he's going to need more than that, and I don't mean anything personal by this, Squilliam, but that OEM Compaq PC is bad in virtually every last part.

First of all, it only has two slots for RAM, and that's really going to hinder him when it comes to upgrading as he'll need more RAM for his needs.

He's also going to need a more powerful graphics card, and the processor could be better as well. Once he's done all that, the 250W PSU isn't going to cut it either, not by a long shot. There's also the issue of cooling, and there's nothing there in the way of decent airflow or fans.

That PC is good for a general use like word processing, web browsing, chat, email, listening to music, flash games, and burning CD's and DVD's, but it's way below what's needed for a decent gaming rig.

To the OP: I strongly suggest that you sell the rig you have and build a nice Core i7 or AMD Phenom or X3/X4 setup with Windows 7 Home Premium. I'm assuming that you've probably already got a monitor, speakers, mouse, and keyboard, so you should be able to put one together for 6-700 clams. I can suggest the parts if you'd like.

Check your motherboard to see if its AGP or PCI-e. If its the former then your upgrade path is so limited you should build a cheap PC from scratch.

Some good advice on this site, but i would suggest doing some research yourself. It honestly is by far the best way.

Goto www.tomshardware.com and check out these two links.

Also go to the forums on tomshardware, there is a whole community of people that will help you with your build.

Your computer as others have stated will most likely not run pcie cards and you cannot upgrade to an am3. I just recently built a pc for under $500 and i live in australia so our prices are alittle higher. If you can afford to spend alteast $500 you will be able to get a decent gaming rig but if you want to play crysis, and play it well i would aim closer to $700 not including monitor.

I beg of you.  Help me.

Where do you buy your computer parts?  What is Our (Australia's) Newegg equivelant?

Yes it has PCie slot.

Ill take Squilliams advice and just buy a graphics card. Then if i ever decide to build or buy a new computer I can reuse it.

Muchas Gracias.

You'll be CPU-bound to a great extent, so don't get a graphics card over $100 if it's only going to be used in that system because you won't see higher framerates.

There are several www.gamedude.com.au is my favourite, www.umart.com.au and www.gocomp.com.au I'm in qld so i know ones around me, but melbourne and sydney have plenty too, but umart is expanding down to nsw & vic and you should be able to get parts delivered anyway.

A quick google search for "cheap computer parts" or "discount computer store" and you can find others though, but i don't know how good they will be.
