Forums - Gaming - Game development costs: Reggie says...

Haha good point.  In a side note, am I the only one expecting Too Human to bomb as hard as Stranglehold?  Technically harder because of its high dev costs.  It just seems to me that when you spend that long making a game two things happen.  1) The game tends to suck, because it doesnt take that long to make a good game and if you spend that much time it means there are a lot of problems and 2) Sales tend to suck, usually this is partly the result of 1.

It wouldn't surprise me any more if Too Human launched to Lair-type reviews and 300k sold or if it launches to 9+ scores and sells 2m.

The game has been a giant cluster**** for so long that nothing will shock me at this point.

Quote from the article :
"Two weeks ago, the company had its biggest sales week ever. Last week, it surpassed that record, he noted. As a result, the console is tough to find for a second holiday season in a row."

I'm even more interested in this month NPD numers ....

I noticed. Has Nintendo stock moved up since the statement came out? I think that's something for another thread.

Well a lot of people probably think Nintendo is overinflated.  I mean, it's a company who's only business is videogames.  Which vary wildly in there profitability every 5 years due to a new war starting up.  They seem to have a sustainable market advantage in the DS, but still it's hard to imagine Nintendo's stock reaching much higher.

HAHAH! does this guy even know what hes talking about? ^

What surprised me is that he said Wii games lowest range is $5 million. You can't convince me the majority of Wii games cost £5 million to develope, especially all the stuff like Dragon Blade / Carnival Games / EA playground etc. Obviously all the ports cost even less then that.

$10 million is also too low for some games, but without the special examples like Zelda / Mario / Smash Bro's etc it's pretty accurate in my mind.

He is including marketing which costs a lot, Its between 50 and 100k for a 30 second spot during prime time television. Think of all the ad money PS is spending this winter and it adds up. You can easily tack on 10 million in advertising.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Twilight Princess cost more then $10 million and I am pretty sure Mario Galaxy cost much more then $10 million.

I'm with Yojimbo here.

Keep in mind we are combining development, production, and advertising costs into a single figure; I can absolutely believe that some 360/PS3 games reach in to the 40-50 million dollar range for that. What I doubt is that there aren't any Wii games that pass the 10 million mark -- surely Zelda or Mario did? Even if they didn't, what's to stop another game from having a 10+ million dollar marketing blitz, akin to Halo 3? That would obviously take it well over the stated mark.

I don't think Nintendo spends money on marketing.

They don't spend any money. They have a huge pool of Yen where Iwata-san and Miyamoto-san swim in all day!

Vaguely.  I mean it's obvious to see that videogames is a very volitile field.  I mean look at Sony, going from making billions to taking huge losses.  Nintendo isn't as foolish by trying "Loss Leading" but I mean right now it's the second biggest company in Japan.  That's insane.

But Twilight Princess was also in development for like 8 years?

Size of development team is a bigger factor than # of years.  We've heard reports that Wii games use 30-50 developers (at a time) whereas PS3/360 can have 200+
