Forums - Sony - Prediciton - PS3's 245% increase in sales last week is a joke

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&sid=a1mLp7v4_fS0&refer=japan

"The 245 percent increase in PS3 units sold in North America was reported by the top 10 retailers for Nov. 18 through Nov. 24, Sony spokeswoman Kimberly Otzman said today in an e-mail. "

Prediction - 245% increase in console sales will not show a significant increase in this month NPD or this weeks VGchartz

Reasoning -

A) Sony's has made similar statements in the past and where proven false (like announcing PS3 sales and then saying that those sales numbers include PS2 and PSP numbers). Them doing again isn't that far fetched

B) Sony's announcing consoles sold to stores. This could very well be the stores Christmas stock and what they expect to sell in December total.

C) In PR you use only the numbers that make you look good, and hide the numbers that make you look bad. Announcing only the percentage and hiding the actual number can only mean that the actual number is low. It isn't vgchartz numbers up by 245%, its sold to stores up by 245%, and for all we know they only sold 10,000 the week before.

D) Historically (using vgchartz numbers) no other console has shown that much of a significant increase in 1 week.

E) Sony numbers come from the top 10 retailers, yet if any of those stores would of been sold out of PS3's, we would of heard it by PS3 fanboys all over these forums... yet it hasn't happened.

Is the Playstation 3 Really Selling That Well?

by Patrick Steen on November 27, 2007

We have seen reports from Japan and Europe showing that Playstation 3 sales are up, even thrashing the Wii in Japan three weeks running. Yesterday saw Sony boast a 300% sales increase in America since the beginning of November. But are things really that rosy for the Japanese giant?

Most signs point to a Playstation 3 recovery after a price cut and a solid advertisement campaign. Moreover, the all important quality titles are starting to hit, from Ratchet and Clank to Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Even Assassin’s Creed ads only sport the Playstation 3 logo, showing Sony has got something right at last.

Yet there are other signs to suggest that perhaps this increase in sales is not as large as we and Sony think it is. We know Sony is very good at getting enough stock to retailers, but Playstation 3’s are in abundance after Black Friday. That needn’t be of too much significance though, since the hard to find Wii is severely understocked, and Sony can take advantage of the hungry buyers who can’t get hold of Nintendo’s offering.

Nevertheless, a 300% increase in the US may not be that much if both the Wii and the Xbox360 saw similar gains during the holidays. Just a little look at Amazon.com’s best sellers list we can find the Xbox360 at Number 12, the Wii at Number 24 and the Playstation 3 all the way down at place 44.

The Playstation 3’s price cut and new 40GB model also saw big gains in the United Kingdom, with the console being in the top 10 of Amazon.co.uk’s best sellers list week after week. However, looking at this list now, sees the Wii at an impressive Number 5, the Xbox360 at a respectable 19, the Playstation 2 at a surprising Number 29 and the Playstation 3 at the shocking Number 71.

So how is the Playstation 3 really doing?

==> let's bash the PS3 again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Time to Work !

A) The E-Mail specifically states PS3, not playstation family

B) You don't know what they're announcing. Could be, could not be... We don't know

C) Uh... duh? That's PR 101, use good numbers and percents... Point?

D) Um... PSP in Japan, after the slim and Crisis Core came out?

E) Umm... this site is only 10,000 strong. There are over 340 million americans. This sit counts for less than .001 percent of the population. And all members aren't American.

Okay
So Black Friday was Nov. 24th last year,
So I'm guessing that it would of counted for sales data that was sent in for NOV 25th 2006.

The PS3 sold 87,225 according to VGC
So for their statement to be true they need to sell approx. 213,700 consoles.

I think they can easily do it.

Predictions For Last Full Week of Sales in 2010)

WII - 80.35 Million

360 - 43.88 Million

PS3 - 41.40 Million

More terrible predictions coming Jan. 2011!!!

The above was for USA ONLY

WOW. That is very impressive.

Didja get that thing I sentcha?

@MontantHatchet and Peter Potamus: Well, it is around 259 units the week before for PS1. Conversely, a sale going from 0 units to 1 unit means that the unit sales have increased by infinity percentage. going from 1 unit to 10 means that it have increased by 900%.

On Topic: We'll see it when numbers come out, it's not impossible for this to occur.

I am a PC gamer, and also have a NDS now, but without access to a Nintendo Wii until End of 2007.

Currently playing: Super Smash Brothers Brawl(Wii), Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer(DS), Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (DS), WiiFit(Wii)

Games Recently Beaten: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (Normal; Very Hard after the next DLCs become available)

Isn't there an entire forum dedicated to Sales stuff around here somewhere?  Why isn't this thread there?
