Forums - Gaming - Describe the Future of Gaming.

Alright I will describe where I think gaming will go in the future. This all will happen in our lifetime.

Graphics will seem to top out in 20 years. The horsepower of the console or computer will be larger but we won't see a big graphical improvement.  Games will be smoother and worlds will be larger without slowing down the system. The graphics between PS4 and PS5 will be minimal. However...

Immersion will play a big role. From rumble to Eye Toy to the Wiimote, we are being pulled more into the game. The game will be even more immersive and feel like an alternate reality. Imagine moving through a realistic forest or dungeon. Head mounted displays have been around for ages but have never really caught on. Low refresh rates, poor resolution, and the bulkiness have made them big headaches. In about 10 years, I expect quality HMD's to revitalize PC gaming. New technologies such as OLED will reduce the size of these headsets and refresh rates will be reduced. Looking to the right will just require you to turn your head to the right. There are HMD's that are out now that allow you to do this but I don't expect them to be popular for about 10 years.

The body will be the controller. Through sensors on the body and gloves on your hands, your actions will mimic the character on the screen. Gloves on your hands will provide you with any action you require. Shooting, punching, or moving objects. There still will be some buttons but most actions will be performed by simulating real actions. I could see Nintendo's next system to use some type of glove device, as this would be the evolutionary step for the Wiimote.

Sex will play a larger role in gaming. It is only a matter of time before someone combines a HMD with a sex/date simulator. The porn industry is a billion dollar industry and it is only a matter of time before they and gaming intersect. I predict Sony to be the first to introduce sex in gaming.

Gaming will enter 3D. I expect Hollywood to enter 3D within 25 years and Gaming to follow about 5 years later. You could argue that some movies are already in 3D and that it has been around for ages but I think by 2030, 50-75% of movies will be shown in 3D(without the aid of glasses). TV sets that can display 3D will become the norm as people will seek out these TVs to relive their movie experience. As more people begin owning these TVs, video game companies will make their consoles compatible with 3D technology. I also expect Sony or Microsoft to be the first to make their systems compatible with Head Mounted Displays, and Nintendo to be the first to come out with a 3D portable gaming device.(without the aid of glasses).

None of these ideas are new so I would like to hear some of your ideas. What does the future hold?

To Each Man, Responsibility

I don't think that this whole idea of "the body will be the controller" will ever come true. I mean, you could do this things outside! It is not like with the Wii were a simple movement lets you control you avatar, it would mean you had to act everything by yourself! Just imagine playing a Mario game like that... I couldn't stand all the jumping I had to do!

Now, in the New World, the gamer could hardly contain his amazement. Software began falling into two types: traditional games or ‘new’ market games. And these ‘new’ market games began appearing everywhere (along with Wii systems) from libraries to grocery stores. The future television remotes mimicked the Wii-remote and the Wii Channels section for channel selection. Girls played with the system as did mothers and grandmothers.

“Let us go into a Game Store!” I said and the two of us entered. It resembled a book store. Traditional gaming was the ‘fiction’ setting and the titles the hardcore loved could be found in what would be the sci-fi/fantasy section in a bookstore. But whatever one could imagine in a bookstore there was a video game equivalent including business games, cooking games, children’s games, biography games, and even technical games.

We left the Game Store and walked until we saw a televised wall (televisions were obsolete in this time. What were screens could now take up entire walls). A gray haired Reggie walked on the stage and said, “Twenty years ago, today, Wii changed the world. People didn’t think gaming could reach females or older audiences in a massive way, but it did. Just recently, we have expanded gaming to education where now schools use our game products regularly in their school plans. We created yet another market by making games for babies and small kids to help with their development. Some might say we should be satisfied by our success. But I say: we have only begun. While we have successfully competed and beaten all other known forms of entertainment including our competitors…” The crowd laughed as Reggie pointed to the date Microsoft left the gaming market and Sony’s small niche. “We are no longer satisfied with competing for the consumers’ entertainment time. They work most of the day. Just as we made inroads into education, we want to make inroads into the office. When the Wii launched, somehow, Wii Sports became a game people played at the office. We are set to make an entire new style of games that caters to the office. We want to expand to make games for the work environment!”

Holodeck, of course!

@nintendo_fanboy: Virtual gaming like that can be done anywhere. You don't have to have snow to ski. You don't have to have water to swim. You don't have to risk your life to experience the thrills in life, such as hang gliding, parachuting, or bungie jumping. That's one of the appeals of the Wii. I can play tennis without a tennis court, I can throw a football indoors. That's the now, and the future of gaming. I agree that a real life Mario would be...well, actually, now that I think about it, it might be fun. Imagine jumping and your jumps are like 6 feet in the air as you come down on a goomba! And yet you only exerted yourself enough to jump 6 inches in the air.
