Forums - Gaming - Will 3d on consoles take off or will it be a gimmick?

Only 50% of households have HD TVs, so it must be about 5% that have 3D TVs.

It won't take off for another 5 years or so

ROFL whos saying its not gonna take off, you know how hot 3D tvs are selling right now? WHEN THERE IS ONLY 1 3D MOVIE? Its gonna take off, not with this gen but with next.

some very nice posts in this thread, thanks to all who are contributing it would seem the consensus is that 3d gaming will be huge just not so much this gen,i can,t wait to welcome the next generation of consoles, but please make them more heat tolerant we gamers are not all made up of money and patience.

Don,t be Fanboys,Be Gamefans,Play games 4ever...GAME ON(msn)

It'll be important. However 3D doesn't yet have a good implementation as of yet. I suspect in the short term the polarized displays with 2*HD resolution are the better bets because you can use light weight passive glasses and display both images at the same time.

There are 3 companies out tehre which actually provide 3D drivers which allow for games to be changed to 3D on the fly without any extra work. Nvidia, Tridef and IZ3D. One of these guys need to implement and sell their drivers for a next gen console and then will there be a 3D boom people are expecting!

I think IZ3D and ATI are working together. Essentially if Microsoft goes ATI again, the IZ3D people may provide the driver or they may be bought out. You can get 3D working on ATI cards but I have no clue as to how it works. Theres very little information, I wish they would provide a setup to a few review sites so people can actually find out that you can indeed do 3D on their cards. Nvidia is still a bit better at marketing their products and what they can do.

not this gen....doubtfull for next gen, maybe 2 gens from now.

3DS will do well as there won't be the buy a new TV part of the deal.

Still there are some people who dislike the glasses idea... so it'll take a while if ever.

Problem with consoles is that the content is not scalable to the available power... but if games were designed with 2 modes: HD and 3D that both maximize the hardware, then that's an other question.

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

It will take off in a few years when you are not forced to buy $200 glasses for each person.

3DS will.

Any other console of this gen needs glasses to achieve said effect, therefore, no. It will flop.

If Nintendo get there first it will be claimed a gimmick. And then it will hugely successful, unlike its competitors, and make the critics look like hypocrites.

Any other outcome or if others follow it will be claimed to be amazing and the next great thing in gaming. Maybe, but thats under the assumption that competitors will match the success of the originator.

edit

...oh sorry you said 3D and not 'motion control'. Sorry, i thought you meant avatars.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

IZ3D does give free drivers to anyone with an ATI card but I never tried their drivers cause I dont have a polarized display. I heard its pretty great...

You can get 3D working with Tridef drivers on an ATI card quite easily. I had a 4850 a year or so ago and first tried things out with Tridef...you just have to go get the trial off their website, you install it and done. That driver is pretty versitile however it isn't as good with updates as Nvidias so it takes longer to get profiles for new games. Another fault it has is that you need to get the stupid 3rd party glasses (they dont make em and samsung discontinued the DLP ones by the time I bought mine).

Honestly, if Tridef or IZ3D came out with an equal or better 3D solution as Nvidia, id gladly recycle all my Nvidia stuff and go over to ATI side :)

Nvidia is too used to their customers paying top notch dollar for their product and then having to jump through hoops just to get it working...
