Forums - General - Godwin's Law

(also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies)[1] is an adage formulated by Mike Godwin in 1990. The law states:[2][3]

As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.

Godwin's law is often cited in online discussions as a caution against the use of inflammatory rhetoric or exaggerated comparisons, especially fallacious arguments of the reductio ad Hitlerum form.

The rule does not make any statement as to whether any particular reference or comparison to Hitler or the Nazis might be appropriate, but only asserts that one arising is increasingly probable. It is precisely because such a comparison or reference may sometimes be appropriate, Godwin has argued[4] that overuse of Nazi and Hitler comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact. Although in one of its early forms Godwin's law referred specifically to Usenet newsgroup discussions,[5] the law is now applied to any threaded online discussion: electronic mailing lists, message boards, chat rooms, and more recently blog comment threads and wiki talk pages.

Hitler Lover! (obviously joking)

You would say that stof, you free speech Nazi.

Although honestly, the longer an interent discussion goes on... the higher the probability of any subject being brought up increases. Though it can't be denied that people love bringing up Hitler, even though there are plenty of modern atrocities you could compare people with too.

Guess it's easier comparing people to former attrocities as opposed to the ones currently happening that nobody is bothering to stop.

SCHNELL! SCHNELL! Express yourself, now! SCHNELL!

that means nothing....nothing at all.
here is my rule

"As an online discussion gets longer, the probablity of a comparison involving (anything) approaches one"

With the vast imaginations of the Human mind, anything can be compared to anything, thus with each new post there is more chance someone will read the thread and make a comparison to any specific thing.

edit. oh...kasz beat me to it. (i had this page in a new tab open for a while)

I don't know if anybody else remembered it, but There was a terrific bit on the daily show dealing with pundits and politicians refering to their opponents as Hitler.

If I may paraphrase his closing.

"Frankly people, when you relate your opponents to Hitler, you denegrade yourself, your point, and frankly... Hitler! That guy worked too long and hard to have any Tom, Dick and Harry come along and say hey, you're Hitler!"
