Originally, I though Sony was just proving once again that their customer support is sucks at best. However, after looking at a bunch of close up pictures, this is seriously well beyond normal wear and tear.
Though, from Sony's view I agree that they should not be liable for this misused item. However, I still feel that they could have put on a dust mask, took pictures for evidence, cleaned off, then opened to see if the dirt was the actual cause of failure. If so, offered to fix at a price, if not fix and let the owner know that in the future this item will no longer be warrantied due to the obvious misuse.
This would have provided excellent customer support. Also, the whole initial refusal of sending out copies of the pictures should never have happened as that only hurt Sony's image. Especially when a lot of ignorant people who watch Fox News will never see the pics to justify Sony's stance.
