Forums - Sony - PS3 HDMI issue...

I recently bought a PS3 and it works great!
However, for some reason it cannot handle switching HDMI to Composite Cables back and forth

I never really cared about graphics and was fine with regular composite cables, but I thought I'd actually try and play my games using HDMI so I bought one and it looks even looks better...

I then decided to take my PS3 to my friend's house but she doesn't have an HDTV so I used my regular ol' composite cables-- there were some issues at times but Google helped me out a lot

My issue?
Well, after going home and I tried to switch back to using HDMI but it doesn't seem to work anymore
The good news is I can revert back to using my regular ol' composite cables but it just sucks not having to be able to use HDMI again... I looked around and tried everything other forums said but nothing seems to help so far
I thought I'd try and ask the PS3 experts on VGChartz
Any help is greatly appreciated

EDIT: I found out that my problem was the HDMI ($40) cable I had somehow f*d itself for reasons I have no idea.. I was at Big Lots today and saw a $12 HDMI cable and thought I'd give the whole HDMI experience another try.. I hurried home and it works flawlessly..!

I just wanna thank everyone for their helpful comments

It Takes A while for the PS3 To Recognize The cables Sometimes, go to Settings and change it to HDMI then turn off your ps3, switch to your HDMI cord, if that does not work then idk.

By 'doesn't work', do you mean nothing shows up on the screen when you turn your PS3 on?

All you gotta do is keep holding down the power button on the front of the PS3 when you use it to turn it on. After ~5 seconds you'll hear a beep. Let off the button and wait a second and a message will pop up on the screen to change your graphics to optimal settings. If its currently hooked up with HDMI, it'll automatically change over for you.

Try going into display options and choose HDMI output

yeah.. I even plugged both the Composite cables and HDMI and it would recognize the Composite cables and it would ask if I want to change to HDMI I'd click yes but my TV would never recognize the HDMI signal and it would just revert back to regular signal... oh, well...

@HexenLord
yeah, sorry by "doesn't work" I meant no signal coming through the TV and it's just a blank screen...
I also held the power button and wait for that second but for some reason it wouldn't work

It's really weird
The TV recognized it the first time and it worked great
I don't know..

hmm for me i had a hard time before some updates getting it from HDMI back composit holding down the power got that. For HDMI these days it usually just recognizes it automatically. I guess make sure it's fully plugged in and that you have the tv set the hdmi port you have it plugged into

so i was at "big lots" today and saw a $12 hdmi cable;
i bought it just to give the hdmi experience another go.. and lo and behold it actually worked
it seems that i had somehow f*d up my hdmi cable - a $40 hdmi cable!

heh..,
thnx for all ur replies..
just giving u guys an update even if you don't care

if you want to revert back to the default setting, just hold the reset button until you hear a second beep , that means it restarted the resolution options.

Yea it's a little finicky switching between the video outputs sometimes. I've found out how it works though.

1) If your switching from Composite to HDMI then the PS3 should automatically be able to pick up the new output. Just confirm the changes and move on.

2) If you are switching from HDMI to Composite however then you will find that the PS3 will not automatically switch to the new output. To fix this do the following:

1. Turn on your PS3 with the Composite cables plugged in.

2. Hold the power button on the PS3 until the system beeps once then release the power button.

Your TV screen should flicker and Lo-la, you now have picture! Just confirm the changes and start enjoying your PS3.
