87 people died? Wow, it must have been a bad crash. A sad day for all those who have lost someone close to them.

The amount of people who died is one thing but what is really shocking is who those people were:

President of Poland and his wife

Last president of Polish goverment in London

3 vice marshals of polish parliament and senate

several so called "president ministers"

president of Polish National Bank

several other highest ranked officials from historical institutions and organisations

14 members of parliament from several parties  (our Parlaament has 460)

a lot of other high ranked officials

bishop of Polish Army and representatives of other churches

6 generals of polish army (highest ranked represenatives of navy/air forces/etc)

plus the most elite special force agents guarding president and crew of plane

Also with reelection in September two of the candidates for president died in the plane crash (current president  and leader of SLD)

Wow. So sad. A country loses several of its leading figures. Its a hard blow.

Im praying for everyone and their families.

Horrible news.

Every major polish military commander died in the crash - air, navy, land, garrisons, ect as well as the president.

I don't want to point fingers at anyone...But I wonder who the heck was the air traffic controller in Smolensk when this happened.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I doubt it was anything but an accident. Plus air traffic controllers make good scapegoats, but pilots in plans have radar, and are the ones ultimately responsable for the people on board. There are dozens of times a day throughout the world that controllers tell a pilot where to go, and the polit says no.

They see everything the controller sees, and care a lot more about there vector.

How saddening to see this.

Oh, I don't disagree that it wasn't an accident. However, it just sounds a little....strange....That it'd happen on Russian land.

Air controlers i think have nothing to do with that.
I don't know how updated is news story in west but the plane crashed during landing manouver.

There was heavy fog, airfield in Smolensk is very small and ill equiped for bag weather system and the plane should have been replaced by new one 10 years ago (but politicians didn't have balls to spend millions when budget was always full of holes)

Ah, that was the next thing I was going to ask about...

I'm not the most fond person of Tupolev aircraft. The TU-154 has been involved in 64 serious crashes since its debut. Good God, why haven't they retired that plane and jailed every engineer that made that monstrosity?

Ahh, well again, sorry for your losse, and the loss of your country.

And I will go ahead and apologize for all the Americans who will no doubt throw a few jokes into this thread.

My condolences to those who lost a person close to them in this tragedy.
