Forums - Sony - Back to gaming, maybe willing to buy a PS3. Help?

If I were you I'd go PS3, especially at this stage in the console lifecycle. The Xbox360 is really being hampered by it's older tech DVD drive and processor while the PS3 is really coming into it's own and is much more future proof.

Sony Online, makers of everquest, has announced that all of it's future MMOs are being released on console also (PS3/PC exclusives) So as well as the current RPG line-up PS3 users will also have a number of MMOs to choose from.

DC Universe Online
FFXIV (ps3 only for a period of time if not forever)
The Agency

Are all due to come this year or early next year and more in the works. Both Microsoft and Sony are renownd for giving MMO makers a hard time making games for their consoles (hence no official announcement on FFXIV 360 yet), but since Sony has it's own MMO branch making numerous games and free online it is more likely to have a better selection and be more open to MMOs in the near future.

Don't forget also that the PS3 is japan's main console so it's more likely to get JRPGs developed for it, though microsoft did do a big push to get more on their console.

PS3 has more RPG games I can think of, and for fighters I really hate using the 360 pad compared to the PS3 pad, I got tekken on the 360 because it was cheap and quite regret it. USB controllers do work quite well with the PS3, I've not had one that doesn't work yet. If you've got a PS2 arcade stick you can buy a cheap converter and plug your PS2 pads into your PS3!

I used to advise friends to get a 360 because of the price, but now the PS3 is significantly cheaper once you add in having to buy wi-fi, a hard drive and xbox live subscription for the 360.

End of the day the PS3 is the better, more future proof hardware and is well worth the purchase. You won't miss out on much, if anything, not owning a 360 as the best RPGS and Fighters are multiplatform, but the way exclusives are going you're more likely to get exclusive FPSs on the 360 and a diverse range of games on the PS3, so getting a PS3 the only games you'll not be able to get will most likely be shooters and action games.

Edit: Just to add I think you might be pleasantly suprised with shooters nowadays. I only got my first latest-gen console the christmas before last and was pretty much the same as you, hated shooters and loved RPGs. I got killzone 2 and found myself quite hooked on levelling my character up (most fps have RPG-like levelling systems to gain more guns/classes) whilst shouting at the screen blasting other players and getting objectives done! Single player is still pretty much the same old thing though.

Whatever system you get I'd recommend Dragon Age: Origins too, great RPG!

Three more things in favor of PS3:
1) You can use any USB controllers (for instance those awesome Saturn USB pads), which is cool for fighting games.
2) Free w-lan adapter
3) Free online

1) this isn't 100% true. I've plugged some USB controllers in and it treats multiple buttons as the same button. While the Saturn USB pads might work, others don't.

Oh, ok. But yes, Saturn USB pads work perfectly, and they are basically a must if you play fighters (unless you prefer arcade sticks).

"Well certainly with the Xbox 360, we had some challenges at the launch. Once we identified that we took control of it. We wanted to do it right by our customers. Our customers are very important to us." -Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb (10/2013). Note: RRoD was fixed with the Jasper-revision 3 years after the launch of 360

"People don't pay attention to a lot of the details."-Yusuf Mehdi explaining why Xbone DRM scheme would succeed

"Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity; it's called Xbox 360,”-Don Mattrick

"The region locking of the 3DS wasn't done for profits on games"-MDMAlliance

Well if you don't like shooter's then xbox 360 isn't for you since the majority of the games on it are shooters but it does have good RPG's like star ocean and final fantasy 13

Right I have a HND in computing so pay attention to my comparison of the two consoles below.

PS3 is the more reliable and most value for money as it comes with the following

  • Blu-Ray - yes the next generation format, do not listen to the people who say Blu-Ray is not much better than DVD, once you get a HD-TV , and play a Blu-Ra you will never go back to DVD ever again, I recommend you watch films like Wall-E, Transformers, Iron Man, Watchmen, Batman Begins.
  • Wi-fi - in built wireless connectivity built.
  • HDD - it's a standard to have a Hard Drive in every PS3, wheras in the x360 Arcade no hard drive.
  • Free Online: - known as the Playstation Network, it is free, although x360 has an eqivelent, I really do not think the silver service is as fast or reliable as PSN, and the Gold Service is expensive and the only extra options it really has is cross chat and cross gaming with friends(you have to do it manually on PS3).
  • Better Capabilities - due to it's unique architecture the cell can pre-process graphical tasks for the PS3's GPU,  this means better visuals more objects on screen an so forth, not only this but the Cell processor is well known for it's mathematical prowess, hence the reason why lots of companies have bought them in huge bulk loads as super computers lol, anyway this abilites help games to have better AI, better physical effects, just look at the amazing destruction abitlity on cars for GT5(an upcoming game). Exclusive games like Uncharted 1&2, Killzones 2, Heavy Rain, and God Of War III are examples of what can be done with PS3 when you concentrate a an single engine for one platform, going multi platform means you have to cater towards the x86 architecture and a games quality is often reduced due to this, just look at any multiplatform game like Call of Duty MW2, it is nowhere near as impressive as somthing like Uncharted 2.

X360 is popular with teenagers and has alot of good FPS games, but most of them are available for PS3, and it comes with the following

  • DVD - yes it's still using the DVD format, games on x360 suffer as a result just look at FF XIII on 360 as evidence of this.
  • Better Online - some fans consider it to have better online features than PS3, but using the Gold service will cost you money and the only thing extra you get over the free PSN is Cross Chat and Cross Gaming, SO YOU DECIDE.
  • Can be Cheaper - only if you settle for the cheapest SKU without getting all the extras, depends on whther you want your console to last a long time before upgrading it (which will cost you more in the long run).

Seen as you are a mature person, the amount of youths will irritate you on XBL, you will find yourself muting them all out, not to mention most of the x360's games are available either on PC or PS3, wheras PS3 has alot of exclusive games that both look and play great that are not available for any other platform.

JRPG's avalilable on PS3

  • Demon Souls
  • Valkyria Chronicles
  • White Knight Chronicles - the most underated JRPG ever, lol, it is an oldschool JRPG at heart and will remind you of PS2 and PS1 days, be warned some parts of the story are cheesy, but believe it or not I loved it 8.4/10. If you love MMORPG's make sure you try this game out, you will be plesantly surprised at it's battle system.

JRPG's available on X360

  • Last Remnant (available and better on PC)
  • Tales Of Vesperia (available in japan on PS3)
  • Infinitive Undiscovery
  • Lost Odyssey
  • Blue Dragon

Multiplatform JRPG's

  • FF XIII (better on PS3 due to the better resolution and textures used, but both games play the same)
  • SO4 (equal on both platforms, has extra content in the PS3 version)
  • ROF (better on PS3, with better draw distance, less bluring)
  • Eternal Sonata (never played it on x360 so not sure which one is better lol)

To be honest the only JRPG worth playing on x360 is Lost Odyssey, it is made by the father of FF, and Demon Souls and VC >> any RPG on x360. Lots of RPG's and MMO's are coming to PS3 now, so it will only get better, but you will find yourself constantly broke on PS3 due to the amount of quality games, lol

Great post jneul. You are really back with vengeance. There are some HM Revenue & Customs offices in Grimsby - since you do most of stuff online these days (eg VAT returns) have you tried to apply for a job with them?

@Sensei - have you made up your mind?
