Forums - Gaming - What happened to Strategy RPGs?

So basically what I am gathering here is that if I want to play a strategy RPG I need to buy a handheld.

Sux that they don't make them for any of the consoles =(

The only one for the consoles that I enjoyed playing was Valkyria Chronicles (PS3). Valkyria Chronicles is a interesting mix of turn based map and real time movement. Even for Valkyria Chronicles thou, the sequel is coming to the PSP. Still the original was alot of fun, you should be able to find it fairly inexpensive as well.

yep, there are only a few for consoles. there's Fire Emblem on the Wii, there's Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3 and there's Operation Darkness and Spectral Force 3 for the Xbox 360. there's certainly more if you count downloadable games, but I think that in retail there isn't much more than what I listed.

Valkyria Chronicles has a good amount of followers here at VGChartz and is a highly acclaimed game.

and yeah, there's the Front Mission remake for DS too. also, if you wanna lose hours only learning a game, there's Knights in the Nightmare on the DS, which mixes tactical battles, character and item management with shoot'em'up stuff, such as dodging bullets in real time.

the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!

Like every other JRPG, Strategy RPGs are on the handhelds.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Advance wars (2 on gba and 2 on DS)
disgaea
vandal hearts
valyria chronicles
FF. Tactics remake and A2
Jeanne d' arc...

But it s true there s not plenty last months

couldnt be more pissed about the valkyria chronicles sequel goin to the damn psp, if they needed more sales they couldve made it multi plat at least. Heres to hoping we get more games like valkyria chronicles on the hd twins.

Sony had a had in bankrolling Valkyria Chronicles. It ain't going multiplatform for a long time.

Valkyria Chronicles series.
Imo this genre is more and more rare.

I used to love the Shining Force games for Sega Genesis and Saturn. I played them addictively, but have not come across anything similiar to them in recent years. I know their is a Shining Force DS game, but it's not even an English title is it?

Have I missed something? Are there any recent games that would be recommended for someone who loved the Shing Force games?

I used to love the Shining Force games as well.  I hadn't played an SRPG in a long time and I thought I would give Disgaea a shot for the PSP.  It was a hell of a lot more complicated than I thought it was going to be.  If you're going to get back into them, be ready...things have evovled quite a bit since the Genesis days.
