Everyone mostly has the chronology down here. But you should def read the books, at the very least try to read Ghosts of Onyx before Reach comes out this fall. The whole book is dedicated to explaining the creation of the Spartan 3's and what separates them from the Spartan II's. Though to be honest the book is pretty depressing. It will help alot though with your backstory lore for Reach since you play as a team of Spartan III's in the game.

I am reading Reach right now, so you say I should read Ghosts of Onyx next?

What about Harvest, this one should happen way before Ghosts and even reach.

I think you should read First Strike before Ghosts of Onyx. Two very good books IMO. Harvest isn't very important for the Halo story and the story of the spartans. Optional u could read "the Flood" aswell, but if you played Combat Evolved you know the most part of it anyways. It's just a little deeper...

yeah Contact Harvest happens before anything else does.  In fact its about the first time the Covenant and Humans even meet each other and what starts the entire war.  However I would make sure to read Ghosts of Onyx by the time that Halo:  Reach comes out because actually Ghosts of Onyx takes place all over in the timeline.  In fact theres events in the book that take place as early as the year 2531 and as late as 2552.  The entire book is dedicated solely to the story of what exactly the Spartan 3's are and its quite moving in some places to be honest.  Not to mention one of the most epic quotes in all of Halo lore.  Trust me that book will make Halo: Reach much more enjoyable for you since you'll get a greater understanding of these characters and where it is they come from.

It's too difficult to put this list in chronological order since the books span multiple decades. The book Fall of Reach for example begins in 2535, jumping back to events before 2517 and ends in 2551 just before Halo CE begins.

Ghost of Onyx begins at 2545, jumps back to 2531 and finishes around 2552 (Part of Halo 2 & Halo 3) for example.

Halo lore dates back to before 100,000 B.C.E.

Even Forerunner's had their "gods" or erm, Forerunners.

http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Precursor

The Precursor's are to the Forerunners as the Forerunners are to Humanity.

The games are somewhat easier to date. http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/2552

  1. Halo Wars: 2531
  2. Halo Reach: 2551-2552?
  3. Halo: CE: 2552
  4. Halo 2: 2552
  5. Halo: ODST: 2552
  6. Halo 3: 2552 - 2553 (Memorial)

It doesn't matter which book you should read first but I'd just read them in the order they came out.

Halo: The Fall of Reach (Great book with the Spartan II project and lives of the Spartans and the Fall of Reach)

Halo: The Flood (More in-depth Halo CE story)

Halo: First Strike (Bridges gap between Halo CE and Halo 2)

Halo: Ghosts of Onyx (completely seperate story which features the Spartan III project)

Halo: Contact Harvest (Based on first contact with Covenant with Sergent Johnson taking the helm)

Halo: Cole Protocol

I'd read Halo: The Fall of Reach and Halo: Ghosts of Onyx if you plan on buying Halo Reach for more than the multiplayer.
