well to sumerize it is Home brew can be built for the PS3 using Java. and those Homebrew application's can be launched directly from within the XMB.
that mean's you don't have to restart the system or anything just pop in the BD-JAVA disc and run the app's like you do any other ps3 application like a standard game or Blu-Ray movie.
one draw back though is there is currently no 3d support just like it was for Linux. but other than that BD-JAVA and their APi's are completely open now.
