MS confirms that Project Natal uses technology from PrimeSense

PrimeSense today confirmed that it will be providing its leading-edge 3D-sensing technology for use in “Project Natal” for Xbox 360.

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq “MSFT”) and PrimeSense™, the leader in 3D sensing and recognition technologies, announced today that PrimeSense will be providing its leading-edge 3D-sensing technology for use in “Project Natal” for Xbox 360.

“We’ve seen tremendous excitement and anticipation for the arrival of ‘Project Natal’ this holiday,” said Ilan Spillinger, vice president of Xbox 360 hardware. “PrimeSense has delivered an important component to the technology, helping us deliver revolutionary
controller-free entertainment experiences in the living room.”

“Xbox 360 Hardware Engineering teams developed the ‘Project Natal’ sensor based on the PrimeSensor™ reference design to support the special requirements of ‘Project Natal,’” said Aviad Maizels, president and founder, PrimeSense.



Microsoft recently announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that “Project Natal” will be available during holiday 2010.

What they are saying
Is that all of the tech required to have two chips in Natal before have been modified to be on one chip. They've also enhanced Natal from a software side as well, which was reported earlier this year. Basically what we saw at E3 2009 was old tech, and the new version of Natal is improved. That's why they are calling it a "system on a chip".

This will bring cost down, and improve functionality. Most have been reading the quotes, but not the article in totality to get the big picture. At the same time notice that this is PR talk coming from Primesense, and not Microsoft. This sounds good, but I need to hear more from Microsoft
