That was before some guy publicly announced that he could hack the PS3 GameOS by going through OtherOS.

Be realistic guys.

This really should have been the end of the thread right here, but apparently some of you have trouble being realistic about these kinds of promises and instead want Sony to allow their console to be hackable just to keep the word of what one of their employees said.

They've seen what can happen to an easily hacked platform with the PSP, they'd have to be idiots to let it happen again just so that they can keep a bunch of ornery people on the internet happy.

If you really feel the need to bitch at someone go right ahead and find the email address of the hacker.

there is an EASY hack for the PS3?

no, i don't believe so.  but if there was an easy hack (like how easy it was to hack the psp) i'd wager $100 the ps3 would be deader then the psp by now.

I don't have the Other OS installed however I do feel 'betrayed' by Sony along the lines of reasoning that kowenicki is claiming.

When I bought the system the feature was present. I had the potential to use it. Now with the update I won't. This devalues the system in my eyes :(

Double standard much?
Don't you find it odd that piracy killed PSP and PS3 but not the Wii, DS, or Xbox 360.

Maybe... Sony is too good at the blame game?

No matter how to twist it, the fact remains that Sony advertised Linux installable on PS3.
There are people that buy PS3s as cheap alternative for number crunching.

Regardless of how small the number of people that uses Linux, it still is a betrayal to their customers.

I am sure we'll see some class action lawsuit on this if it turns out to be... not April Fool's.

And these people who brought PS3's for number crunching updated their PS3's because?

They don’t use them for gaming, to access PSN or home so why would they give a flying copulation.

Me thinks you are just enjoying the cheap shots

assumption is the mother of all f**k ups

Piracy doesn't kill a system, it kills game sales. Look at GTA Chinatown Wars.

The thing Sony doesn't need atm is a PS3 software drop.

Then they shouldn't have included the other OS option in the first place if this was a fear, wasnt a big leap to know this was a way in.

Anyway like I said, I couldn't give a toss either way,  unlike others here I always thought his was a 'meh' feature, and hey presto now everyone seems to think it is a 'meh' feature.. strange that.  Mikeb is yet to report though.. so lets wait and see his spin on this.  Mikeb really liked this and was one of the reasons "tech enthusiasts" flocked to the PS3 in his opinion.

For me, Sony thought was a nice addition that could sell a couple more PS3, something to help consumer swallow the 600$.

Now they don't really need that, and if it can avoid being pirated. Simple, cheap and effective.

I'm going to ask this again since it got lost in other stuff--

What is the point of installing another OS on your PS3, especially Linux?

lol look at all the PS bashing :D This is when a company is trying to preserve game sales by closing possibilities of hacking WHICH is in return good for us gamers and people are yet again whining like SOny stole their car :P This keeps getting better and better

and yea like someone already said. at 600 bucks such a feature is justified...as of now? Nah not really

To run emulators? Like, literally, thousands of NES and SNES games to play on your TV. I'm sure there are many other reasons, but that would be the main one for me.

OP - I've already expressed my dissapointment with Sony for this move. Another instance of a company completely going back on their own word. Pathetic imo.
