Forums - Sony - Sony's Blatant Lie (About Other OS)

End of the day, you can hate Sony for it, but personally I'm more inclined to hate Geohot for ruining it for everyone. Sony's gotta do what a company has to do when faced with potential lost game sales (pretty much the only way they make money on PS3) through piracy, but if Geohot had just settled for knowing he had found a flaw rather than announcing the hack to the world in intimate detail, then Sony wouldn't have an excuse to cut OtherOS support.

Actually I think the opposite is true.

As I have always said I personally couldn't give a toss about this feature and so I dont care they get rid of it.

Yes sony lied.. but so what?  they also lied when they said they had no plans for a Slim.  People didnt mind that lie.

MS and Ninty lie too and  I just wish that people would accept that Sony are no better and no worse than any other company in this regard.

The sooner people accept that corporations dont give a crap about anything other than making a profit the better for all of us.

but apparently thats not how things work.

Ninty,MS and Sony lie but fanboys of respective console only make a huge deal when its their hated company that does the lying but when its their favourite company they dont mind at all.

Lying about price cuts is one thing. But selling a product with a set of features and then removing it at a later date is classic bait and switch.

No, that is not what is occuring. The main thing that Sony are being criticised for in this thread is NOT the removal of the otherOS feature. They are being criticised for going back on their word.

That said, the PS3 has now been hacked and the otherOS feature made it possible. I can understand why they got rid of it

Sony reserve the right to remove features from their Software.

It's in the ToS agreement. If you don't like it, don't install the software.

As for going back on their word, well who can blame them with hacks looming?
I'd go back on my word about leaving my back door unlocked if people threatened to start stealing things from my house too.

besides, Install Other OS option was just taking up valuble space in my XMB like it was for countless other PS3 owners.

So it's all black or white? There are many degrees of lying, I don't recall MS or Nintendo disrespecting their customers as much as Sony has done in the recent past.

For example, I keep hearing stories about how Nintendo fixes consoles for free even after warranties are over. I'm not saying they do this out of pure altruism, clearly the end objective is to keep their brand well seen and thus generate profits. But in my book that is much better than just trying to extract as much money as possible in the short term and screwing customers by lying about features or inconveniencing their lives (as in the episode I mentioned earlier).

Actually the PS3 wasn't hacked at all. The guy even said he gave people a "tool" and they could do with it what they wanted. Ok, so let's see. You have to boot into linux and you can peek physical memory including looking through anything that's memory mapped. In order to do that, you have to pulse a line on the motherboard (requires taking system apart) and hope you get lucky with timing while his kernel module does a hard loop on setting some memory location. If successful, then and only then can you see physical memory.. while being booted into Linux. I assume the need for this is is because kernel modules (which you can obviously load freely) exist in a virtual address space so you can't directly access physical memory from them. So his stuff installs two hypervisor calls you can make from userland. I don't know why Sony is overreacting, because there's still a very long way to go to do anything on the PS3 from here. However, they may feel this is nipping it in the bud.

I generally disapprove of this action even though I don't use Linux on the ps3. Why bother, anyway? Not enough memory. However, don't ruin it for everyone else, Sony.

Lie Definition

1. A false statement deliberately presented as being true; a falsehood.

2. Something meant to deceive or give a wrong impression.

I don't think they did either. They obviously wanted to keep the "other OS" on the original PS3's because they would have just removed it at the time of the Slim launch. Their hand was forced, the PS3 is the most secure console this generation and the PSP is the most hacked.

There is no way they will let the PS3 become like the PSP hence the removal of Linux support, is it pre-mature? Of course but they want to nip this in the bud asap.
