Forums - Sony - Sony Explains why it passed on NATAL TECH

Badassbab said:
Natals aimed at the casuals who probably own or owned a Wii + non gamers who have yet to get into gaming due to the controller issue.

well that's also the point of the move... or did you think that move bowling and move pingpong were aimed at the super hard core?.... it's basically the point of all motion controls... and nintendo is genius for having seen it. Heck it's the same thing with touch screen.

Neither Sony nor Nintendo have the same level of investment and pure research that Microsoft has in this field. What they saw of the physical technology behind Natal isn't actually the Natal that Microsoft was developing. They bought 3DV for the technology, patents and some software but they added it to work which was already underway in their research and development labs. Microsofts technology here for 3D gesture recognition is ahead of anything in the academic or comercial fields. What Sony says about Natal is pretty irrelevant they would trash talk it still if it was about the best interface ever developed.

We will see just which motion system is best at this years E3, I can't wait for people doubting Natal to see it in action, then they can come back to this thread and eat crow....

WTF????how was this trash talking???why do you people love to make up stuff??

@squilliam

I would appreciate it if u don't derail every single PS topic.

@any mod

why hasn't he been banned yet,,,,he has derailed 3 sony threads just today.totally off topic and provoking comments is what he has been doing.

This thread went to hell!!!!

QUICK!! RUNN!!

I couldnt care less About motion controllers...Let MS win this battle, I dont want my system to turn into another wii :/

Then buy a 360 and not a PS3.

Have you seen the wand?

I hope this isn't true. If Move is just MotionPlus + and Natal is just EyeToy + than chances are neither will do to well.

""This amount of headroom required will make it problematic to support software that was released prior to Natal.""

....this is dumb. Only Sony thinks it's relevant to have your old games upgraded to work with the new controler functions.
that the controler can be used with the game is one thing (like the first dualshock), but to actually go upgrade games that barely 2% of the owners are going to play with the controler....waiste of money

Ahh no it's not dumb, for starters all it would take is a patch.  And by allowing backwards compatability you are expanding the moves games library massively.  Not only that but new casual gamers buying a ps3 for the first time won't have to try and work out if a game will work with move or not.

When you give it abit of thought it actually makes alot of sence.

Did Nintendo say they passed on the tech because it was not reliable? Nope.
Sony did.

I got a warning for trolling, LOL.

Technically, Nintendo did say something to that effect.  They said they passed on the tech because cost issues and LATENCY concerns.  So they must have felt there was too much delay in the demo they were shown to warrant further investment in said tech.  Plus, I'm sure they were already invested with Gyration Inc. in coming up with the design for the Wiimote.

So why is it okay for some that Nintendo shares its experience with these 3D cams, but when Sony does it, it's trash talk.  Even when the guy says he "loves" the tech, but it just didn't bring anything new to what they were already developing.  One word, bias.

It is interedting to me that Nintendo felt there would be an issue with latency with these types of cams.  I know that all vids I have seen where someone has actually been playing Natal, there has been lag.  Of course, this was before they dropped the processor inside the cam, forcing devs to take up to 15% of the 360's resources.  We'll have to see if MS has found a way to work these issues out or if it has made them worse.

Either you wearing Sony glasses or me wearing Nintendo glasses, or both.

I remember reading that Nintendo passed the 3DV tech thingamanig because it lacked buttons.

I don't wear glasses.

"3DV showed off a camera that detected motion in 3D, and had voice recognition – but Iwata-San was unconvinced he could sell it at a Nintendo price point. He also had some worries around latency during gameplay."

http://www.vg247.com/2010/01/26/report-nintendo-passed-on-natal-tech-back-in-2007/

Many sites, including this one, reported this story.  All citing the same Nintendo exec.  So, was Nintendo trash talking, as well?

Somehow Galaki will still condemn Sony passing on 3DV technology because it seemed limited, but Nintendo passing on 3DV technology for similar reasons will be just fine.

Let me guess, it's all in the difference between their 2 justifications.  Totally cool for Nintendo to be concerned about latency and price, but Sony is shit for being concerned about the camera not picking up some movements as well as they would have liked (even though to fix that, it'll involve raising the PRICE by requiring more development and hardware revision).  Oh oh, and the Sony guy's interview showed that Sony just couldn't come up with ideas for games!  Lulz!!  Nintendo would never have that problem!  (but Galaki's earlier statement about N being concerned about a lack of buttons would mean that N was having the same question: "what the fuck would we do with this?")

Granted, MS seems to have taken the tech to a new level since then, if I'm to believe Squilliam, and what the hell, why not.
