So I've been on a complete retro gaming binge lately. Civilization 1, Battletoads, Space Quest 3, Crystalis, and plenty of other old NES and PC games mostly. What I want to ask is what are your favorite old games that you still bust out every once in a while? And any other old games that you may suggest to me.

How old is retro?

Hexen - good old game

Did you play Hexen 2? The class system was much better, plus the conclusion to the whole Hexen/Heretic saga was amazing in that game ;)

YES! I love Heretic/Hexen/Hexen 2. Another to add to the list. I should compile a new list soon =) I really won't be buying any new games beyond SC2 and Civ 5 for about 9 months at this rate =)

There are so many good games to play from the past xD On this cue, I started playing Vagrant Story a couple of days ago. Man that game had so much strategy behind it. I was getting raped by a boss because I forgot to properly level up a weapon type for it xD

See I actually missed Vagrant Story the first time around, and I started playing it a few days ago, it's mildly weird. I don't get the item system just yet, but I like the gameplay! I probably won't play it more until I finish Parasite Eve or Saga Frontier though. I almost finished 1 character in SF, and I'm on disc 2 of PE, so I'm getting there =P

@Khuutra,

To me, retro is PS1-gen or earlier, so as long as its more than 1 gen old, I'll call it retro. But that's only because PS1 is full of so much win that I have to include it =P

r505Matt:

Try Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber.

It is pretty great, though a somewhat acquired taste.

And listen, in Vagrant Story, pick a weapon for each enemy type and use that weapon exclusively for each type. Trust me, you'll need it for a couple of early bosses.

My anti-dragon weapon leveled up a few times against the first freaking dragon boss...

First Dragon boss is actually easy. It's when you get to the Wyvern a few bosses later that things can go ape-shit on you. My Iron Spear has +25 to dragons and 13 piercing, and I barely scratch over 20 damage to it >_>

Well, I meant the first dragon-y boss outside of the intro, I guess that's the Wyvern.

I think I was doing like 5 or 7 damage per hit by the end, but I started off doing about ONE.

On the plus side I got really good at dodging its attacks.

Nope, the intro has a weakened Wyvern. Then there's a Dragon fight in the basement of Lea Monde, right before you go to the streets for the first time. The Wyvern comes a few moments later on the abandoned mine, but this time it's in full strength.

Dragon was easier for me than Wyvern because I farmed off Lizardmen for a while, so I was at +13 Dragon when I fought it. Even so, I started doing 10ish at best, ended up doing 15-16.

I would personally say pre-PS1 era. But everyone seems to have a different cutoff...

Also, I forgot to mention one of the best Action-Adventure/RPG from the NES, Faxanadu.

It's the precursor to games like Soul Blazer and Terranigma, so you must give it a go if you liked any of these games ;)

Not quite. Faxanadu was a spinoff from Xanadu, which was Dragon Slayer 2. This led way to a title I was going to recommend- Dragon Slayer 4, aka Legacy of the Wizard. (IIRC, the Japanese subtitle was Drasle family, or something like that.) Whereas Soul Blazer (also an excellent game) was the first of a trilogy, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma being 2 and 3. Mind you, I'm not downtalking any of these titles.

As for other titles I'd recommend (other than Legacy of the Wizard, of course), I'd also say The Guardian Legend, and the Dragon Quest/Warrior games. On a less frequently replayed basis is Zelda 1 and Metroid, but I do those mostly to see how much of the game I still remember...

Actually, in a way old Falcom games like Xanadu, Legacy of the Wizard, Ys I-II, Socerian, etc were a direct precursor to Actraiser, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma.  Quintet (who made the latter) were made up of the main team at Falcom who left during development of Ys III.

You know, I've been meaning to check out Ogre Battle 64 for a while now. There have been others in the series that I've liked, but for whatever reason, I kept putting it off.

What kind of options do I have in terms of weapon types? It isn't better to wait until I have better weapons to level them like that? I'm not totally sure how the system works yet.
