Haha, you're getting old buddy! To be honest, I'm not that interested in black & white films, as I'm just a random cinephile, but I don't see myself studying cinema history or anything like that later on. No doubt some of the stories might be great in old movies, but I'm sure the filming techniques and the way actors play and stuff would turn me off quickly. It's like with very old RPGs, I have a hard time enjoying them because of how Squaresoft spoiled me with CGI cutscenes and great production values in their later games. And damn, so many movies to watch, so little time! I'll try to watch all the movies listed in this thread at least once though. |
Okay. Then go with my original suggestions plus try and get pristine versions of Hitchcock's great works like Vertigo, watch the Lynch movies - Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Wild at Heart and Lost Highway should sort you out for WTF - even if it's only WTF is this about. Watch Cronenberg's movies and consider the many other fine films suggested. I would add that Boutros is quite right and Gattaca is worth a watch. Also Moon (recent movie) if you haven't see it is great little SF film too with a nice twist and a fair one.
For a change of pace, if you want a great little quiet movie try The Station Agent - I always have to recommend that as it's so good but so little seen.
I presume you've seen a pristine copy of Blade Runner - preferably the Final Cut? If not sort that out immediately.
If you want to see real epic filmaking then watch Lawrence of Arabia - but you'll need a huge TV and a pristine copy to make that worthwhile. Like 2001 that isn't a film that works well on TV really.
Also A Clockwork Orange and The Shining from Kubrick should interest you. 2001 maybe (arguably best film ever made) and Dr Stangelove if you want like pitch black comedy. I presume you've seen Seven if you've seen Fight Club?
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
