This and the fact that MS backed the wrong horse during the blu-ray/HD-DVD race, would surely put MS off using the blu-ray media, when there are plenty of other options available.

And I don't know enough about the java/IHD issue to comment, but I suppose that would be a deterent too.

@DirtyP2002 I'm unsure if those are valid points about the programs, besides the fact that they're a pretty small fragments of blu ray as a whole, The VC-1 codec sales and distribution is hanlded by Sonic solutions, so It's unclear if MS gets any money from the use of the codec.  And you also forgot to mention that Sony is also a member of the AACS LA.

All consoles will use blu ray is equivalent to - Nintendo will not make another console. Nintendo ALWAYS use proprietry storage. They will again.

As for downloadable only, have you seen PSP:Go sales?

As for just the 720 using blu ray - why would they bother using a format where they have to pay a lot to use, when instead they could get the use of a format similar to HD-dvd likely for free?

I doubt they'll go to 100% DD for games. I don't think the interwebs is well enough developed in all countries to handle DD on that scale, and despite the pace of innovation I think there will still be a lot of countries lacking in the necessary infrastructure by the time nextbox comes out. Certainly here in New Zealand (not a big market I accept) a DD only nextbox within the next 3 or 4 years would fall flat. The transpacific cable that feeds the internet between the USA, NZ and Aussie is already bursting at the seems and holding down connection speeds and data limits. A 2nd cable is in the works, but it hasn't even begun being laid. In 10 years we will definitely have the infrastructure to handle it. So I think the next nextbox (and any other console brands that are still around) will be DD only.

Whether MS lead the way into mass adoption of that holo disc thingy, or uses what will be the pretty cheap blu-ray medium by then I can't really predict. I think whatever way PCs jump the next box will jump.

Personally I hope not. I would rather this generation last a little longer and then the next to use flash memory sticks. Much faster transfer rate, much much MUCH faster transfer rate also you can hold a lot more, since storage expands with time. It's just better in every way. Also, the "reader" is dirt cheap in comparison to BluRay readers.

yea but it seems that you hink these two companies are enemies or have never worked together.Sony pays money to MS on every Vaio sold.they do alot of partnership together since one is a hardware company and one is a software company.

if MS wants  the next box not to be out of date with the market and be able to play HD movies off a physicaal disk(as most gamers are disk collectors aswell),then they don't have much choice.

because toshiba doesn't produce HD DVD anymore and all the manufactury lines of HD DVD are now either closed or produce blu ray.even toshiba makes blu ray now.So cost of creating the disk would go up since you have to make the disk in low numbers(only for xbox) by a 3rd party company.beside it would alinate the next box owners ffrom the movie market and ect...
