It's called Monster Hunter. The west just hasn't figured it out yet...

That's kinda random.

Monster Hunter has more in common with Diablo or Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance than it does with Pokemon!

Really? i must be playing the wrong game this past 4 years :-s

its not why JRPGs are not doing like Pokemon.
a lot of the people who play Pokemon don't even know what RPG means , i remember this kid saw me playing Persona , and then he said "Wow is this pokemon?! , i didn't know its on PS2" , same as the people who play WoW , if you ask normal people they're tell you "those WoW PC Games " which they're talking about MMOs.

also Pokemon is pretty Newbie friendly, its simple, its fun, its time consuming and its portable, and of course you gotta buy every version to catch them all.

The wrong game because monster hunter is like pokemon?  eh?  Are you playing monster hunter or pokemon?  I don't understand what your meaning is.

Monster hunter is not an RPG....

People really have this misconcepted. There is no "level up"

It is the next big thing, but it's not an rpg.

CURRENTLY PLAYING:  Warframe, Witcher 2

Nintendo should do a Pokémon MMO

Simple. Pokémon fans aren't all JRPG fans.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Pokemon has such a wide appeal because it had a combination of a massive ad campaign and it was such a unique game idea that no one had ever seen (basically the concept of an MMO before MMOs existed with additional single player traits).

As for why other companies don't utilize the 'hype' of Pokemon to help sell their products, its partially stupidity and partially because they don't know how to sell their product. Games like Final Fantasy, Disgaea, Persona or Fire Emblem can't really find a tie-in with Pokemon, but that's okay. They have found their audience and are doing well with that 'niche'. The games that should be trying to make a tie-in with the 'Pokemon Crowd' are games like Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter and the Mario RPG series. Games which either have similar gameplay to Pokemon or have ties to a similar heritage back to 'classic' JRPGs of the past, such as Dragon Quest.

Why these companies have decided time and time again to forgo good advertising and just throw their games on the market hoping they would sell is beyond me. Its only been recently that one company (Nintendo) has stepped up and shown that they were going to try to proactively fix the problem by advertising the games themselves. And considering their choice of games to publish and advertise (Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter), I don't think its any big coincidence.

Its true, series like Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter have many ties to WRPGs.  Heck, to someone who wasn't trying to actively look for them, they might even mistake Dragon Quest for an older styled WRPG.  But make no mistake, they have a ton of JRPG influence.  Especially Dragon Quest, having created many of the formulas and genre defining gameplay elements found in other JRPGs today.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Your character doesn't "level up" in Pokemon either... I guess it's not an RPG?

The majority doesn't even know that Pokémon is a JRPG. They think it's just a game.

Take a look at my photos on flickr

pokemon is pokemon its technially an rpg but I dont think people think of it as that at all. its been a fad since i was in 7th grade and everyone had pokemon red and blue and none of us got any work done until the banned pokemon from school a year later...its a neverending fad. the term jrpg and pokemon just dont mix at all. people dont look at it as an rpg mainly because of the tv show, the card game, and all the merchandise behind it. there's so much more to it than just an rpg video game.

***POKEMON IS A JRPG THAT THE CASUAL GAMER CAN PLAY. IT'S SO SIMPLE FOR THE CASUAL GAMER TO PICK UP AND COMPLEX ENOUGH FOR THE HARDCORE TO GO CRAZY WITH.
