Forums - PC - Need help with connecting my hdtv as my monitor

Hello all:

I have just connected my PC to my new hdtv with a dvi to hdmi cable. After about an hour and a half of messing around with it I finally figured out how to switch between the vga and dvi-outputs. To get the dvi output to work I have to go into my graphics card menu and switch from analog to digital.

My question is: is there a way that I could have both the analog and the digital connected at the same time so I could just switch back and forth between my tv and monitor by using the source button on my tv remote? It's a pain in the butt having to switch to analog to digital when i want to watch a movie on the internet and have it displayed on my tv.

And yes i know I could just leave my tv as my monitor but I prefer not to do that. Thanks in advance for any help.

Do you have two dvi outputs? You can use a dvi-vga converter. It works for me. What is your graphics card?

no I just have one dvi output and one vga output my card is NVIDIA GEForce 5200 (old I know)

I can have both connected at the same time, but I always have to go into the nvidia menu and switch between the analog and digital output (i.e. I can only have one displayed at a time)

I just want to have both sources selected at the same time just for different monitors

You can get a switch with a hdmi input and two hdmi outputs, connect the dvi- hdmi cable to the switch input and two hdmi-hdmi cables from the outputs, one to the monitor and the other to the hdtv. Problem is you will have to buy the switch and two more cables.

I suppose it´s better wait to get money to upgrade to a new graphics card , with two hdmi and/or dvi outputs.

think i might just save up some money and buy a new computer in the summer....do newer computers come standard with two hdmi and/or dvi outputs or do i have to specifically have them put on?

I´m not sure, but i believe many recent graphic cards have only digital outputs and a dvi-vga converter is included in the pack. I have a EN8800 ultra bought 2 years ago with 2 dvi´s output, no vga.
