I've used summons sparingly. It's never something I plan to use during any fight, but if you're in a fight with multiple opponents and feel it slipping away, a summon can be a good desperation move for you. It gets your two other characters off the field, and you can usually take out a few of the enemies to make the battle more manageable between the summons fighting side by side and then Gestalt mode.
