Sony is in an interesting position. They are the only vendor who talked up the longevity and backwards compatibility of their console before it hit the market...
If they release a new console before Microsoft the marketing could get very interesting... Sony promised a premium, backwards compatible experience lasting 10+ years.
If both get new consoles in 2012, Microsoft can actually say their console was cheaper, their backwards compatibility was better (because it is still there), and their console stayed on the market a year longer (RRoD jokes aside)...
