Well its the easiest to use, free, and it works. I fail to see a problem here.

I can't remember how i got mine to work. I think what you have is that you aren't sharing your computer with other ones around you. You do have win7 right? I think I went in and made it connect with other media devices in my home. The computer that is. Though everything I have is wired so i didn't have to do any wireless stuff. |
^^ This
Go to your PC and windows media player, you need to set up the media share so your PS3 can use/access the content, have to set
Using Windows Media Player 11 as the server
Open Windows Media Player 11
From the toolbar, select Library then Media Sharing
Check "Share my media"
On the PS3 - Under Video, Photos or Music, select "Scan for media server"
Go back to the PC, and you should see a pop up showing an unknown device trying to connect.
Allow the device, and everything should work.

No, it's not the "easiest to use". PS3 media server is even easier to use, is also free but infinitely better.
For instance, with PS3 media server you can watch mkv with subtitles or instantly decode disc images. All you do is select the folders you wish to stream from; no refreshing and restarting the server as in tversity and no media library as in windows media player is required. It also doesn't contain any ads and drm.
"Well certainly with the Xbox 360, we had some challenges at the launch. Once we identified that we took control of it. We wanted to do it right by our customers. Our customers are very important to us." -Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb (10/2013). Note: RRoD was fixed with the Jasper-revision 3 years after the launch of 360
"People don't pay attention to a lot of the details."-Yusuf Mehdi explaining why Xbone DRM scheme would succeed
"Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity; it's called Xbox 360,”-Don Mattrick
"The region locking of the 3DS wasn't done for profits on games"-MDMAlliance

hm well its the easiest program to use that I have found, but then again I use it for my xbox 360 so my experience is probably different.
TVersity is pretty easy but ps3mediaserver is even easier and better IMO (more container support, better GUI).
You can (in theory) setup Windows Media Player to serve your files over to your PS3, but I never got it to work.
Winamp also allows you to stream data to your PS3, which is what I used for a bit but I decided having to run my PC & PS3 at the same time was a waste of electricity. Oddly enough, building a HTPC will take ~6 years to pay for itself in electricity costs
Luckily it provides many other benefits like less wear on my PS3 and better media functionality.

As i remember i had to allow the Ps3 access to the computer from the computer. Long time ago though so i cant really remember
assumption is the mother of all f**k ups

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler
I agree PS3 Media server was the easiest to set up and use.
