Simple question-- what is the best version of DDR and why?

I'm entertaining the idea of getting into it but I'm curious which one to get since there are a bajillion of them spread across several systems.

NOTE-- I just don't want a PC version.  A 360, Wii or Gamecube version is fine, though I would probably prefer a PS2 version since that would involve no moving of systems around.  If a 360, Gamecube, or Wii version is significally better though I will go for that.

you have a pc so why don't you just get stepmania with some additional downloads, it is free

Honestly, and I should have included this even though I didn't know for sure there was a PC version, I have no interest in any way at all for a PC version.

My SDTV that I would be likely playing on is a piece of crap but it's bigger than my computer monitor and even has the bonus of having speakers!

The Mario one could be interesting since that I could probably at least recognize the songs.

sadly I do not know any of the console versions.

I used to play DDR, Pump it Up, and In the Groove a lot a few years ago and Stepmania on PC is the best thing you can get, really.  It's completely free too!  (Make sure to get a good adapter and controller that can do left+right and up+down)  In the Groove simfiles are really nice too.

On console though:

I have a lot of them on PS1 and PS2 and I like DDRMAX, DDR Extreme, DDR Extreme 2.  Try to get In the Groove if you can too but is kinda rare or expensive to come around these day.

Didn't mean to sound rude there, I just don't have any interest in any PC versions because that would just be more trouble than it's worth for me. :-p

I've played most (maybe all?) of the PS2 versions, and of them I like Supernova 2 the best. The steps simply have the most fun choreography, if you can call DDR choreography. It also has the best difficulty curve, since difficulty ratings can be really inconsistent in other DDR games.

Stay the hell away from Supernova 1, though. It's a total abortion of a game.

I briefly played Hottest Party 1, but it's hard for me to compare it since the soft pad I was using at the time impaired my enjoyment.
